SPEARFISH - More than 300 people are scheduled to arrive for the 73rd annual conference of the South Dakota Municipal League at the Spearfish Convention Center Wednesday through Friday, Oct. 4-6.
A debate between Gov. Mike Rounds and his Democratic challenger, Jack Billion, will highlight Thursday morning's session. Other convention notables will include a session led by Bob Sahr, South Dakota Public Utilities Commission chairman, about the Municipal Role in Telecom and Internet Technology; and, a forum about Amendment D, the property-tax initiative, with David Owen of Pierre and Rick Kreibel of Rapid City offering opposing views.
There will also be roundtable discussions with police, attorney, fire, finance, personnel, historic preservation, public works and other sectors of municipalities.
An exhibit area will be set up poolside, with several companies participating and showcasing their wares. And guest entertainment will include a M.A.S.H. party, T.R.A.S.H. (Truly Rational and Sane Humans) comedy group, tour of Spearfish Canyon, golf tournament, run/walk event, bus trip to Deadwood and a social at the Spearfish power plant.
The South Dakota Municipal League, organized in 1934 as a nonpartisan, nonprofit association of incorporated municipalities in South Dakota, provides a cooperative group for improving municipal governments in the state.
