Wrong to pull out
I think Bill Hughes (Sept. 30 Forum) is wrong in his support to pull out of the Middle East and to work diplomatically through the United Nations to protect U.S. from the terrorists in the Arab world.
If or when we move out, Iran moves in and controls Iraq. Then, with their nuclear power, the terrorists take over Saudi Arabia and now they control two-thirds of the world's supply of oil.
Bill and our leaders know we (the U.S.) import 60 percent of the oil we use every day and are dependent on the oil from the Middle East - 10 million barrels a day and at $60 per barrel - this is $600 million daily. Saudi Arabia alone produces this much. It is no wonder the terrorists want to win the war in Iraq and are increasing their war efforts to get U.S. out.
May be they are waiting until after the elections in November to see if the United States is going to pull out of Iraq.
Bill is cruel and ill-advised to call the United States leaders the "Ivy League barbarians." Such terms only weaken the United States in the eyes of the world.

Hypocrites
Pro-lifers are not pro-life, they are pro-unborn life. Therefore, they are hypocrites. If they were pro-life, they would be for an end to war, certainly this one, knowing that it was just a way for angry Americans to get revenge on those Mr. Bush insisted were "out to get us." And poor old dad.
Now that this third-world "puppy" has become an attack dog, how to let it go is the problem. We're in more danger, not less. When will we learn getting even is not the answer?
If pro-unborn life people were really pro-life, they would be pro all of these things: sex ed, parenting classes, child care, education, universal health care, better jobs and wages, affordable housing, contraception, etc.
People who are not financially or emotionally ready for parenthood are "bad news" for baby. One of the parents should get paid to stay home the first few years. But no, that's welfare, not "real" work!
They say, "One of the aborted might have had the solution to our problems." Why not one of the children or the unborn dying in our insane wars? Or one of our soldiers dying daily in Afghanistan or Iraq. You guys are hypocrites.

Yes, we care
I can't speak for others, but I am pro-life. Elizabeth Kistler's letter (Oct. 2) states, we don't care what happens to babies once they're born. Really? Then why do child abuse laws even exist? Child labor laws?
Just be accused of child abuse and agents of child welfare, protective services, the police, will descend on you like an avalanche. Your kids will be taken away for the duration of the investigation. That's just from the allegation.
There are books and magazines covering how to be a good parent, with articles on child-proofing your home to discipline. Since no one cares about kids these are obviously a waste. Also why do people spend time to become teachers, child psychologists, day care providers when no one cares?
Someone who is pro-life cares about what happens to children after conception, birth, throughout their life. Someone who is pro-choice cares about children, too, they just want to decide if a fetus will be carried to delivery.
About Andrea Yates: I was one who sent a letter to the judge protesting the verdict. I know there were others expressing their disgust at the outcome.

Adoption a win-win
With everyone's strong views on both sides of the abortion issue, no one is talking about the option of adoption. There are tens of thousands of people wanting to adopt a child and waiting years for that privilege or go overseas to adopt, as a personal friend did.
Adoption is a win-win situation for everyone involved, especially for the child. The birth mother gives the child life and doesn't suffer the lingering emotional scars of the alternative and the adoptive mother receives the gift of a lifetime.
Let me tell you my story. My daughter is adopted. She was the product of an "unwanted pregnancy." I cannot imagine living without her. She is a vibrant, wonderful woman who is a productive member of society. She was 36 years old on Oct. 5. Hope you had a happy birthday, Honey.

Thanks, Kiwanis
Thanks to the Rapid City Kiwanis Clubs for the creative foresight, force, focus of community service and work in Mary Hall Park. With the cooperation of our dedicated Parks Department (and thanks to the National Guard and Job Corps), it is truly a one-carat emerald in our City Parks Crown - and still development in progress.
I nominate the Kiwanis Clubs for a "Service Club of the Year" Award. Take a day to stroll our many acres of beautiful parks, then thank our Parks Department.

Murder is illegal
In response to the Oct. 3 letter by Melanie Sekellick, she states: "Women of South Dakota, my plea to you is not to let this extreme abortion ban pass. We have choices, rights and deserve everything women in history have strived for. Do not allow yourself, your daughter, or granddaughter to be stripped of those rights."
I disagree. South Dakota is not taking any of your rights away but one: the right to murder innocent babies that have every right to live, regardless of the circumstances. Murder is against the law in South Dakota, you know.
You say you won't allow your daughter to be raised in a state like this? And I say, "Don't let the door knob hit you where the good lord, etc."
