Election
Vote responsibly
With all of the initiatives and referendums on this year's ballot, it is easy to be lazy and apathetic and just mark the "no" oval or just mark all of the "R" spots. Who has the time to really find out about all of the issues and candidates? We do!
Our brave soldiers and vets have given us the way of life we enjoy today. They have sacrificed their time, freedom and lives so that we are able to make a choice, to vote for who we want and to vote for the laws that govern our country.
There is no good reason not to vote responsibly. Sample ballots are available everywhere. Anyone can vote absentee for any reason. We can do it on a lunch break.
We only need to look at other countries, where citizens walk for hours and stand in long lines to enjoy the privilege of voting that we sometimes take for granted.
I disagree with Gov. Rounds that voting "no" on all the issues is the way to responsibly vote because we fail to take the time to inform ourselves.
Honor the sacrifices of our vets and soldiers. Vote and do it responsibly!

Protect the helpless
I am voting yes on the abortion bill. Life begins at conception. All that is added later is the mother's nutrition.
I learned at an early age that all life feels pain. For many years I have observed that most abortions are for someone's convenience.
A God-loving nation should protect the most helpless.
Let's have prevention and adoption.

Light has been shed
With amazing advancement in technology, the topic of abortion only continues because of our refusal to admit the truth.
In the dark ages, the '70s, we had no ultrasound and the topic was just not talked about. But today, a great light has been shed on this procedure. We know when life begins and that all body systems are intact between 40-42 days gestation. Can they feel?
Our liberal society wants this "extreme" and "harsh" act of violence to be silenced. Planned Parenthood would like it hushed because of their huge profits. But we know too much now to excuse it any longer.
We're just starting to reap what we've sown: Declining enrollment, weak Social Security base, little respect for human life, hurting women.
"Over the counter" emergency contraceptives can prevent pregnancies in rape/incest.
Read the bill. Doctors will only be prosecuted for treating a woman "with the specific intent of causing or abetting the termination of the life of an unborn human being." "Competent' doctors don't rely on abortion.
What else is legal that we refuse to look at? Ultrasound reveals this hidden holocaust - www.silentscream.org (part 4).
Abortion just goes too far. Vote Yes on 6.

Best and brightest
Everyone who meets David Lust is impressed with his intelligence, his energy and his ability to listen. He has much experience serving our community, from his legal work advising small businesses to his service on boards of non-profit organizations. He is one of our best and our brightest. He would be an excellent representative from District 34.
Please join us in voting for our friend and neighbor, David Lust.

A blessed life
Referred Law 6 is personal for me. I am the result of an "unwanted" pregnancy that occurred a few years before Roe vs. Wade. Adopted at birth, my parents told me a romantic adoption story which I believed. The recent abortion issue has forced me to ask some difficult questions that I didn't dare consider before, regarding circumstances that might have surrounded my birth mother's pregnancy.
Did she get pregnant under consent or was she the victim of date rape? What health problems did she endure causing my partial paralysis at birth? Did she regret delivering a baby that she wouldn't know? Did she choose adoption willingly? Would she have chosen differently if it had been after 1973?
I now realize it's possible that choosing life may not have been her first inclination. Whatever distress she endured, in the end a child was born and has a blessed life today because she ultimately did choose life.
A No vote on 6 will not suddenly give mothers the right to choose - in effect, they have always had that. This is about protecting babies' lives.
Mine was protected, so I will vote Yes on Referred Law 6 to help protect others.

Secretive courts
Vitriolic letters have been written to the opinions column lately concerning the ACLU. Why be angry with them? Their beef is with the judges who make the rulings. The ACLU is simply the messenger that brings their civil rights cases before the court, which agreed with the ACLU message in seven out of seven lawsuits brought against the state of S.D. and a S.D. school district. (We can already sue school boards, contrary to political rhetoric on Amendment E.)
Judges and state courts should be our last defenders of our civil rights. When judges fail in that obligation, they, as well as everyone in government, should be held accountable for their actions and failure to uphold their sworn oath of office.
Five of the first 10 amendments of the Constitution were written for citizens accused of a crime. The framers knew first-hand the abuses that occurred in the monarchies because the ruling class was exempt from the law.
Immunity and secrecy in government should concern everyone. Our state government and courts become increasingly more secretive under the cloak of selective "confidentiality."
Vote "Yes" on Amendment E for accountability.
Vote Ron Volesky for open government.

Working hard
I was a page in the Legislature this year. The experience was amazing. I learned so much about the Legislature.
I got to work with Sen. Bill Napoli. He was great to work with. He showed all the pages and all the interns respect. He was patient and actually explained how things worked and further ignited my interest in politics.
Sen. Napoli is a man of the people. He doesn't play the games many legislators play while in Pierre. He respects the taxpayers' rights, too.
With Sen. Napoli working hard for the people, I am proud to have someone in Pierre who works so hard for us. Sen. Napoli represents the family values South Dakota is famous for. He's working to help us keep our hard-earned money in our pockets and not be shamefully wasted.
So when you see the rotten, low-life ads that are running trying to destroy a good man, remember, Bill Napoli never sold out to Adelstein, never took money from Adelstein and will never abandon the hard-working people he represents.
P.S. Vote Yes on Amendment D control your own property assessment and taxes. Sen. Napoli believes we shouldn't be taxed out of our homes.

Actions speak louder
Children have always been an integral part of society. Now, more than ever, they are being drawn into debates - especially with the possible upholding of the abortion ban drawing near.
Every day, in almost every place I look, I see people trying to persuade other voters and myself to either side.
This has gotten me thinking about a few things. Obviously, we can't decide morals for other people. Almost no "pro-choicer" will ever be able to bring a "pro-lifer" to their side, or vice-versa.
Yes, I do understand that there are people who are undecided in this debate, but shouldn't they be able to choose their morals for themselves?
Also, instead of worrying about the unborn so much, wouldn't it benefit us more to worry about the children we have now? There are about 30,000 children who live in poor families right now, plus many more who are waiting to be adopted.
Shouldn't we be doing something to help them instead of spending thousands of dollars on funding for ads, buttons, signs and shirts supporting/opposing the abortion bill? After all, actions speak louder than words.

Taking from poor
The video lottery machines are not something that South Dakota cannot be proud of. There are more casinos in this state then grocery stores. And now they're putting them in grocery stores.
There isn't a person that doesn't know a family that has been hurt by the video lottery. Quit taking from the poor and giving to the 331 rich South Dakotans. Vote yes on Initiated Measure 7!

Pre-conceptions
In our current political climate we're often passionate about candidates that we support and issues that are near and dear to our hearts. It's sometimes easier to stick with what we've always believed than to take a hard serious look at our position.
Such is the case with abortion. Even as you are reading this you probably have a pre-conceived idea on how you'll vote.
Reason tells us that all life has value. Moms and Dads are generally good decision-makers, but in the case of the baby's life shouldn't the baby have a voice?
Since this is a highly charged issue, it is indeed time to back away from the emotional aspect of this question and look at the current medical facts - life begins at conception. Now the only question before us is whether, after examining all the facts and evidence, we are willing to protect the life of the innocent pre-born and prevent psychological scars the mother will bear if she chooses expediency over the life she is carrying in her womb.
Treat women with respect and dignity by helping them make the same decision their mother made - she chose life.

Time to move on
I don't usually get too involved in politics, but I feel compelled to write a note about Ed McLaughlin who is running in my district. Ed has been in politics for a long time. People have been saying over and over that it's a good thing, but I disagree.
I know Ed has many friends in town who like him. But our government in South Dakota is suffering because folks like Ed get the bug of politics and make it a life-long career.
Ed needs to move on. The state needs to move on. We need new blood in Pierre.
All this "experience" Ed talks about isn't benefiting us. Sorry, I think it's time that we get things rolling again and vote for someone different.
I am a Republican and will be voting for Justin Lena.

I'm no criminal
As one of the many seriously ill South Dakotans depending on the medical marijuana initiative's passage, I want to thank you for your support for this compassionate measure. If it does not pass, I could end up in jail for trying to live as normally as possible.
For 20 years, I have had multiple sclerosis. I have tried numerous prescription medications, but none of them have worked on my incredible stiffness and spasms. When I wake up, I am nearly paralyzed, unable to move.
The one medicine that has preserved my mobility is marijuana. It also relieves incredible pain and spasms.
I am not alone; a new study found that one in eight multiple sclerosis patients use marijuana to treat their illnesses.
I have had over a half-dozen neurologists across the country state about my illness: "Yes, it has been proven beneficial for MS symptoms; just don't get busted."
I am a nice person, college-educated, who didn't ask nor do anything to acquire this disease that has robbed me of most of my life! I am not a criminal!
Protect doctors and patients from arrest. Vote yes on Measure 4.

Lives these values
We have a wonderful opportunity to make Jack Billion our governor. He's a respected South Dakotan with great integrity, intelligence and life experience. With his vision and leadership, we will finally move forward in healthy ways.
This administration will bring a new era of truly wise and humble civil servants to Pierre. He is committed to providing fiscally responsible, open leadership, protecting our safety and civil rights, and providing well-funded education, affordable health care, productive jobs and business opportunities for everyone.
Jack Billion is married to Deb Wagner Billion, my good friend from past school days. Throughout childhood, Deb and her family began each day praying together:
"I will try this day to live a simple, sincere and serene life;/Repelling promptly every thought of:/discontent, anxiety, discouragement, impurity or self-seeking;/Cultivating: cheerfulness, magnanimity, charity and the/habit of holy silence;/Exercising: economy in expenditure, generosity in giving, carefulness in conversation,/diligence in appointed service, fidelity to every trust and a childlike faith in God" (Bishop Vincent).
Jack and Deb Billion continue to live these values everyday! Please take this opportunity to vote for Jack Billion. You will be so proud of your choice in the years to come!

New shepherd
Re: Ministerial group urges No on 6: When the early Reformers renounced the oppression and savagery of the Catholic Church during the Dark Ages, the true Word of God was received with welcome and joy by all people who were hungry for a loving and merciful God. Mainstream churches evolved and flourished with crowds of converts who loved God in their lives.
But like anything that begins small and with best intents (i.e., governments, corporations, churches, cultures norms and mores), perversion and apostacy invade and eventually contaminate. The reason is simply man and his relationship with power and greed (I could also include sex).
Jesus foresaw at the end of times there would be a separation of sheep and goats. The separation will be those Christians, who, for whatever reason, "politically-correct" His Word, or deliberately rebuke His Word, or who in their own error lead others to question and turn away from His Word.
If your faith group leader chooses murder over God's Word, please do not be blind sheep. Find a new shepherd.
God is always loving, merciful and compassionate, but He has never compromised His Word and will separate and judge those who do.

Female's choice
How would you feel if you are a female, raped and become pregnant? Let's take this one step further. You're married and have children in their teens. You're raped and become pregnant. Should you be required to carry this fetus to birth?
I wouldn't want to, and I wouldn't want to have to leave my home state to find a doctor who would give me the abortion I want. This should be the choice of the female, and no one else should be able to tell her she most go through the pregnancy.

They don't hide
We need to elect candidates' who don't hide from the question, "Do you support all innocent life situations?"
It scares me to have someone represent me who doesn't respect all life, especially those within the mother's womb. It makes me wonder how they will vote on issues that support the life of the elderly, and those with mental and physical disabilities.
I know this is extreme, but how would they vote on legislation that gives the right to doctors to terminate those who suffer or are not productive?
Gov. Rounds, Bruce Whalen and Elli Schwiesow respect life, all innocent lives, and don't hide behind the label of pro-choice. Be careful how you vote, one day it might be your life these candidates will decide.

Arbitrary raise
The S.D. Attorney General's explanation states that the S.D. Constitution currently requires that all taxable property be valued for tax purposes at no more than its actual value, and all property be classified and taxed uniformly.
This is not exactly what is currently happening in our county. The problem that now exists, and has for some time under the present system, is that the County Assessor's office can and must raise your assessed value arbitrarily if they can locate a recently sold property that they believe compares with yours and can be located in any area of your city that was sold for a higher value than yours. They can automatically raise the assessed value of your property to match this.
This has not only happened to me. It does not compare with the above attorney general's explanation.
The only recourse available to dispute this after rejection by the County Assessor's office is the County Equalization Board. After denial there, in an unpleasant manner and leaving humiliated and angry, are the courts.
I cannot believe the members of the Chamber of Commerce raise unfounded material to discourage votes on this amendment. Please vote Yes on Amendment D.

Will work hard
Once in a while a candidate arrives on the scene that you really feel has the capacity to do well for our state. This year, David Lust is that candidate.
I am asking my friends and neighbors in District 34 to support David Lust for House. David will work very hard for the betterment of government, business, education and families.
His experience includes serving our community on the board of directors for Big Brothers/Big Sisters. His business leadership and vision on the Rapid City Chamber Board of Directors will be invaluable in Pierre.
Please vote David Lust on Nov. 7.

Moderate approach
Please vote for Justin Lena for South Dakota House of Representatives. Most South Dakotans say that we vote for the person, not the party. If this claim is true, then Justin Lena should win this election.
He is a small businessman, and he understands the joys and the challenges that come with entrepreneurship. I know he will work hard to address the skyrocketing health-care costs facing anyone who must self-insure or who wants to offer insurance to his employees.
It's time that we have a balanced, moderate approach to state policy. A vote for Justin Lena in the District 34 House race is a positive step in this direction.

Decent guy
As a resident of legislative District 34, I am happy to support Justin Lena in his race for the state House of Representatives. Justin is a local businessman and committed family man. This background provides him with first-hand knowledge of the difficulties small businesses face when trying to provide health care insurance.
With his 11-year-old daughter in public school, he understands the importance of developing sensible funding solutions to make sure our kids continue to perform well as we move into a global economy.
Most importantly, Justin Lena is a thoroughly decent guy who will work exceptionally hard and never take his constituents' support for granted.
Please join with me in voting for Justin Lena for House in District 34!

Competitive
I met Jeff Nelsen over 30 years ago when he was a front-running competitor at the Black Hills Speedway. Not only was Jeff competitive, but he also exhibited the qualities of good sportsmanship, leadership, determination and common sense.
His pit crew, I know, would come out of retirement to help him if Jeff chose to come back to the track to compete now. That's loyalty!
Jeff is a good man. I know him well enough to say that if he's elected to the state Legislature, he'll take all the best qualities with him to Pierre, and he'll represent the citizens of District 33 to the very best of his ability. And that's considerable.

Doesn't get it
Even though Mike Buckingham has been in the Legislature and on the school board for years, he doesn't get it. He thinks South Dakota politicians are doing all they can for teacher salaries.
At a recent candidate forum, he talked about our problems with "sparsity" (rural school districts with very low student populations) as an excuse for having the worst teacher pay in the nation. The problem with this argument should be obvious. Our neighboring states, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, even western Nebraska, also have to educate kids in remote rural areas. They teach their children foreign languages, music and lab sciences.
And guess what? They all pay their teachers substantially more than we do. If a local teacher gets hired by a Wyoming school, it's a huge pay raise. Sparsity is not the reason for our low teacher salaries.
We need legislators who are committed to finding education at a level that will prepare our kids for the 21st century.
Jeff Nelson and Paula Long Fox are running hard in District 33. They understand that a good education is the single best tool for success.
Vote Nelsen and Long Fox for the House.

Best qualified
We have the opportunity to elect a true representative of the people. A man who has time and time again translated our message for responsible government to actually make a difference.
The qualifications of Mark Kirkeby to be our voice in the Legislature are superior assets. He has the experience, an actual track record of delivering common sense in government.
Mark Kirkeby is an honest man. He does not play the game of politics.
Mark represents his constituents, all of us. His integrity, energy and knowledge of our concerns and opportunities are well-respected in Pennington County. We will miss him in county government, but what a difference he will make in the Legislature for District 35.
With no reservations, Mark Kirkeby is truly the best-qualified man for the job. Active involvement in our community, six years of government experience, a voting record and a huge list of accomplishments are assets that will make him effective from day one in Pierre.
I am a Democrat and I am voting for Mark Kirkeby because we need to elect the most-qualified man to represent us in Pierre.

Pro-life state
It is difficult to find words to express my repugnance at reading that Stephanie Herseth is "proud to be endorsed by Planned Parenthood," the leader in the business of killing babies. She and her pro-abortion cohorts (including former senator what's-his-name) have been conferring with Planned Parenthood, Abortion Rights Action League, and Emily's List about how they can defeat our Referred Law 6.
It seems they are seeking to belittle South Dakota for being "the most pro-life state in the nation." They plan to continue spending their huge abortion business profits in support of Ms. Herseth and other anti-life candidates. I have read that Planned Parenthood plans to spend $8 million trying to defeat our pro-life bill.
Personally, I am proud to be a citizen of the nation's most pro-life state, and I hope all South Dakota pro-lifers will join me in voting "Yes" on 6 and "No" on Stephanie!

Real debate
Thank goodness we have people like Justin Lena on our ballot. He's running for the South Dakota House of Representatives in District 34 and I think he deserves your support.
He's running on a platform of balancing the Legislature, which means bringing more views to the table so that we will get a better discussion of the issues. We need more open-minded people like him so that we can have a real debate on problems like low wages and reforming our campaign finance laws.
For too long it's been the same establishment-type people who've relied on name recognition and party affiliation to get elected. I don't think that's good enough any more, not with the challenge of building an economy that can compete in the 21st century.
I know Justin to be a very hard worker, both in his own business and when it comes to this campaign. For many weeks Justin has been out door to door to meet as many of the voters as possible.
I commend him for that. It shows that he's serious about the job of being a legislator. I hope you will give him a chance to work for you in Pierre.

Done her homework
I would like to encourage voters of District 35 to vote for Senate candidate Theresa Spry, because she is going to work hard for all the citizens of South Dakota. She is someone who understands the struggle of people who may face issues such as unemployment, medical bills or lack of medical insurance, low wages and increasing property taxes.
I know Theresa is intelligent, hard-working, empathic and has an open mind and a big heart.
She has done her homework on the many concerns that affect South Dakotans on a daily basis and will bring a reasonable voice to the Legislature. We need someone who is not a hot-button candidate to represent the majority of us who just want to see some progressive, positive work get done in Pierre.
Vote for Theresa Spry on Nov. 7.

Don't have a voice
To the Christian clergy strongly opposed to the abortion ban, let me ask you this. What part of God's law, "Thou shalt not kill," do you not understand? And how do you explain God's own words, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you" (Jeremiah 1:5)?
I'd like to know what is "compassionate" (your words) about a baby being ripped from its mother's body. I bet those millions of babies would like to know also. Oh, I forgot, they don't have a voice in this.
And how about all the millions of women who want so desperately to have a baby, but can't, and those who try to have babies, but they miscarry? Can you explain to them what compassion is?
Abortion is just an over-used method of birth control to "get rid of it." For the victims of rape or incest, there are other options.
I am so thankful that the Bible-believing Christian church where my daughter and I receive our Christian education believes life is sacred. As the head of God's church, I thought you did, too.
I am voting for life on Nov. 7.

Knowledgeable
This spring I had the opportunity to visit with legislative candidates on educational issues. I found Tom Katus to be business-like and knowledgeable.
He understands the need to be competitive to keep teachers. He knows we must have quality education to help our students in a world economy. He knew the issues and had well-reasoned ideas.
Elli Schwiesow was polite, friendly and proper. She told us of her support, being a former teacher. Despite this, I was alarmed by some of her positions.
She supports private school vouchers that would harm public schools. Her idea during the primary on how to improve schools was the "65 percent Solution." This is an idea coming from out-of-state, right-wing groups that dismantle our public education system. In Georgia, where this is starting to take hold, student support systems, safety and activities are being stripped.
We need someone who will tackle problems in a positive, reasoned and moderate manner. Tom Katus is that person.

Can't relate
South Dakota's own Stephanie Herseth recently cast her lonely vote against the Child Custody Protection Act. Her vote allows minors to cross over state lines to get an abortion without their parent's knowledge or consent.
Thanks, Stephanie, for teaching our children that it's OK to kill their babies, deceive themselves, and lie to their parents.
As if parents don't already have it tough enough trying to raise their children! Of course, Stephanie can't relate to parents because she never has been one.
Someone should inform her that South Dakota stands for values such as life, honesty and integrity and we choose to protect our families, not contribute to their destruction.
I'll be voting for Bruce Whalen. I know where he stands.

Makes me sad
I was so sad to see pastors not only defending murder, but advocating murder. Nobody, no one, can deny that abortion is killing - killing of the fetus.
Only a twisted, deceiving mind can deny the scientific evidence that, right from the embryo to the actual birth, the fetus is a child. And killing the fetus is killing the child. Under no circumstance is it permitted to kill someone else for the sins of someone else. And the child, though as yet unborn, is itself innocent.
And for Revs. Bruce Baum and Don Stoebner to claim to be pastors and then lead people to murder, it makes me very sad (Oct. 25 Journal).
It brings to mind Our Lord's own Words: "It would be better for that person to have a large millstone tied round his neck and be drowned in the deep sea," Matthew 18.6.
Pastors, we are praying for you. May God Grant you His grace.

'Republicrat'?
Stopped at a light on St. Patrick and Fifth, my seven-year-old son commented on what someone had done to the Vote Yes for Life signs. He asked me why someone would do something like that to other people's property.
I told him that they had no respect for other people's property. A seven-year-old can grasp exactly what that means and he thinks someone should tell the police.
I heard Tom Katus tell an elderly Republican couple that he is a "Republicrat." Is that because he doesn't have a commitment to his own party or a way of making his affiliation seem benign to vulnerable voters? Or is that what Katus and Adelstein make when you put them together?
Democrats are being called on the phone and told that they have to vote for a Democrat if that's how they are registered. This is a lie! Anyone from any party can vote for whomever they choose in a general election.
It is my hope that when they do vote it will be for a candidate that has more integrity than what I have seen and heard lately.
Please support Elli Schwiesow with your vote.

Intrusion
As a Republican American Indian male and life-long South Dakotan, I view the issue of Referred Law 6 not as a matter of life or choice, but as an issue of government intrusion into an individual's and family's personal, private health matters.
Many of my fellow Lakotas will agree that government intrusion, whether at the tribal, state or federal level, has been an oppressive force in our experience as American Indians.
As Lakotas know all too well, government has intruded into our personal lives and communities too many times, leaving detrimental and devastating effects. From bans on our Lakota spiritual and cultural practices and prohibitions on speaking our Lakota language, to the "accidental" sterilization of Lakota women and the management (or mismanagement) of our personal and community resources, our experience with government intrusion leads me to conclude that Referred Law 6 will not be good for any South Dakotan's sake, especially if we want the ideals of freedom and liberty to be more than just concepts.
Government intrusion in the form of HB1215 goes too far. Vote no on Referred Law 6.

If you want a judge who's a South Dakotan through and through, who's smart, fair-minded, independent and committed to applying the law as written, you should vote for Pete Fuller.
I've known Pete Fuller for more than 30 years. He's a guy who has raised good kids, stayed married to his college sweetheart and been a loyal friend, albeit a feisty friend.
Pete's not a pretentious guy. He's practical, down-to-earth, learned in the law and most importantly, impartial.
He was appointed to the Seventh Circuit by Bill Janklow. Since that appointment, Pete Fuller's record for good, impartial judicial decision-making speaks for itself.
I believe Pete Fuller has just the right mix of life and legal experience South Dakota needs in continuing an honest, open judiciary.
I'm voting for Pete Fuller for Seventh Judicial Circuit judge.

Abortion ban racist
As a pro-choice voter, I support candidates who are committed to helping women and their families. Anti-choice policies threaten not only women, but families, businesses and our health.
I am a 36-year-old married woman with two small children. I have a master's degree but choose to stay home with my children at this time. I strongly believe that every woman has the right to decide whether she wants a child. This includes access to birth control and abortion.
The passing of HB1215 would not stop South Dakota's women from getting abortions. The wealthy, upper and middle class women will still be able to fly or drive to a neighboring state to receive an abortion. It will be the poor women who will be most affected by HB1215.
This makes me think of the Pine Ridge reservation, which is in the poorest county in the United States. Also, the average annual rate of rape and sexual assault against Native Americans is 3.5 times higher than for any other race. This abortion ban is not only sexist, it is also racist.
Please join me in voting No for Referred Law 6.

Protects women
If you don't believe that abortion is killing a child, maybe you will believe that abortion hurts women and society. Results of the four largest record-based studies in the world revealed that women with a known history of abortion experience higher rates of mental health problems when compared to women without a known abortion history.
Anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, suicidal ideas, substance abuse, relationship problems and problems with parenting are a few of the common side affects of an abortion that have been studied since the 33 years abortion has been legal.
Think of the effects on our society when women are suffering from these disorders. It isn't just a ripple effect, it causes a tsunami affect on families, the workplace and society.
One of a woman's most important liberties protected by the United States Constitution is her fundamental right to a relationship with her child. Omission of facts concerning any medical procedure is criminal. Why shouldn't a woman know all the facts regarding an abortion? There is a beating heart and another person involved. Medical technology has proved that beyond a reasonable doubt.
Referred Law 6 protects women and society.

Works harder
Pam Hemmingsen works harder than most people I know. She's poised, professional and confident, and she will make an exceptional legislator.
I've worked with her on a number of projects and not only does she keep her commitments, she typically does more than is expected of her.
Well-organized and efficient, Pam will do the work for you, the voters of District 32. She won't rely on the opinions of others, but instead will do the research herself. She will make sure not only to listen to her constituents, but to inform herself on each issue so that she can make a well-reasoned decision.

Proven leader
John Koskan is a proven leader with 16 years experience in the state Legislature. I have found John to be a hard-working, dedicated legislator, always striving to make South Dakota a better place to live and work in.
This past session John authored the bill that established the South Dakota Energy Infrastructure Authority, thereby enabling the state to establish transmission line corridors for electrical power transmission. This was necessary if South Dakota is to fulfill the potential opportunities of wind power, an alternative energy source strongly supported by John.
In addition to his legislative knowledge, John, with a mechanical engineering degree from the South Dakota School of Mines, would bring a wealth of experience to the Public Utility Commission.
His zeal for exploring new energy sources, plus his many years of working to pass laws that enhance energy expansion, makes John the perfect candidate for this position.
John realizes the PUC is a regulatory agency, but he also believes the PUC can encourage energy generation and development, in addition to bringing technology improvements and advancements in the telecommunications arena.
John Koskan is a proven legislative leader who will be a welcome addition and asset at the PUC.

Wonderful choices
Tired of a Legislature that refuses to raise minimum wages? Ignores a special report on education? Spends too much time regulating medical practice and interfering in personal decisions? Ignores the health-care needs of women and children?
Fortunately, Rapid City voters have wonderful choices in 2006. Together we can restore citizen-oriented government in Pierre - a Legislature that will focus on serious issues challenging our state.
In District 32, Tom Katus, experienced in a broad range of social and economic interests, can join the Senate and two creative and passionate women, Pam Hemmingsen and Suzan Nolan, could liven up the House.
In District 33, Dennis Finch can bring his compassionate maturity to the Senate and two vibrant moderates, Paula Long Fox and Jeff Nelsen, can serve in the House.
District 34 voters can retain principled Sen. McCracken and choose idea-filled Suzy Dennis and Justin Lena for the House.
And in District 35, Theresa Spry can replace Bill Napoli, representing women, rather than disparaging their rights to safety and independence. Laurie Wudtke and John Buxcel will bring progressive ideas to the House chamber.
Yes, voters have a chance this fall to vote for a change in Pierre. Let's do it!

Future on hold
My wife and I bought a small piece of property in the Black Hills. When we bought it, we started planning our future home, but now it is on hold and we may have to sell this property, instead of building our dream home.
Why? Because of the unfair increases in the property taxes.
Please vote Yes on Amendment D.

Too simple
As the election draws close, I feel I must speak up. I've become increasingly concerned about the new Republican word of choice, "simple."
We heard much more than we wanted to about "simple" rape, and now we have a wanna-be senator candidate who made a "simple" mistake by forgetting he was not a Republican when he took out his petitions to run in District 33. He then "simply" misconstrued his opponent J.P. Duniphan's record, stating she had voted for all tax increases in the 12 years she served as legislator, which was not true. Her record clearly shows she voted with her party's line. He might not have been aware of that as he was not choosing to be a party member, he "simply" didn't want to receive their mailings!
He has "simply" committed perjury which the party seems willing to accept rather than take the chance a dreaded Democrat might take the seat from them!
It is Dennis Finch who will offer District 33 the experience and leadership they need to address their needs in the coming years, not the man who is a newcomer to politics and worse yet, a RIJO - Republican in January Only!

Stand up and lead
Character references should be based upon the knowledge of one who is in a position to not only see one's actions but also to see how one lives out their life in a private setting.
I've watched Dennis Schmidt's life and have seen people whom he pastored 20-plus years ago still to this day ask him to pastor over their wedding ceremonies. This positive influence and leading also led young people to become missionaries serving worldwide.
I've seen how he treats with fairness, generosity and kindness with those whom he works with. I've seen business practices that if there is a gray area, he chooses the side that would best suit others instead of himself.
Dennis believes this state and country must return to a high moral standard for every aspect of our lives. His leadership is timely for South Dakota.
We need more men and women like Dennis to stand up and lead our great state back to that which it was built upon.
Join me in putting people like Dennis in positions where they can win back this state to the people who work so hard to keep it progressing.

Choice is clear
"Abortion law goes to far"? I would like to point out the article on Oct. 22 does not reflect the views of the entire staff. While well-written, it does lead the reader to believe that the whole of RCJ and its other publications believe that HB1215 should be voted down. I am here to make sure it is known that at least one member of the staff does not share this belief.
Here is why I am choosing to dissent on this issue. First is, there is the choice of the "Mother to be" to place the child for adoption or, reporting the crime and receive emergency contraception.
Secondly, "Roe" of Roe vs. Wade has since confessed publicly that she wishes that she could change what she had done.
Third, was not this all brought to the forefront during a time when most people were decrying the killing of so many innocent people in "Vietnam"? Is it not ironic that the while it was wrong to kill halfway around the globe, it became OK to murder the babies of the "make love" generation?
The chose should be clear! Vote life. Vote on Nov. 7. Vote Yes on 6.

Unprincipled view
There were 814 abortions performed in South Dakota in 2004. I am not surprised by the Journal's position on HB1215. Their excuse of financial risk and stating the law would go "too far in restricting abortions" is illogical and unprincipled.
The law won't allow 23 mothers in case of rape or incest to kill their babies, so the Journal will support 791 killing theirs.
There were 576 abortions in 2004 because the mother "did not desire to have the child," while 397 "could not afford the child." (S.D. Department of Health, 2006. Mothers were allowed to give more than one reason, thus the responses outnumber the number of abortions.)
If Dr. Beuhner wants every child to be wanted in order to be of value, certainly he realizes the value of "healthy families" adopting and financially supporting women and their babies.
I would find a healthy home for any child that a woman does not desire or cannot afford. Death does not need to be the quick remedy to a difficult situation. Compassion, assistance, encouragement and support will save two lives without a lifetime of remorse.
Vote yes on 6. Vote Yes for life.

Be own assessor
Are you tired of being at the mercy of a "market" you have no control over? Are you tired of being at the mercy of an assessor you have no control over? Are you tired of being at the mercy of a buyer willing to pay much more than you did for a "similar property"?
Would you like to be able to stay in your home despite the skyrocketing property values all around you? Would you like to be your own assessor? Would you like to have a real good idea what your property taxes will be every year?
Do you want to pay taxes based on what you paid, or what someone else paid for a similar property (because they paid more)?
Do you think it would be nice if the assessed value of your property increased at the same rate as your neighbors? Do you think that after you retire, it would be nice to not worry about property taxes?
Then vote yes on Amendment D!

Moderate roots
I have lived in South Dakota most of my life and know that, for the most part, South Dakotans are free-thinking people. Although leaning to the conservative side, we have had few true radicals on either side of the political spectrum.
Lately I feel this has been changing. The Republican Party I once knew and belonged to in South Dakota has changed, and for the worse, in my opinion.
A voice for moderation and saneness is Tom Katus. I have known Tom for nearly 30 years and know that he is a person we can trust to help bring the South Dakota Legislature back to its moderate roots.
He is a person that can make the left side of the aisle a viable part of the political process in Pierre where it is now one-sided with the left side being virtually ignored.
I urge voters in Rapid City that are in District 32 to vote for Tom Katus for the state Senate.

Moral decision
I recently read about the Pastors for Moral Choices speaking against Referred Law 6 and am grateful to these people of faith for their courage in taking a stand. This cynical legislation denies medical options to girls and women in the most dire of circumstances. To deny victims of rape and incest the option not to give birth to an attacker's baby truly punishes the innocent.
I agree that voting No on Referred Law 6 is the moral and compassionate decision.

Speak to the courts
In 1824 Thomas Jefferson gave warning, writing: "The great object of my fear is the Federal Judiciary. That body, like gravity, ever acting with noiseless foot and unalarming advance, gaining ground step by step and holding what it gains, is engulfing insidiously the special governments into the jaws of that which feeds them."
We live in era where Thomas Jefferson's fear has been realized. The court has decided that to determine whether our laws are in accordance with our constitution, it has the authority to ignore the language of the constitution, legislate from the bench and reference other nations laws.
We need only look to the bizarre ruling in Nebraska where a federal judge overturned a vote of 70 percent of the people protecting marriage. The ruling was rightly overturned by the Eighth Circuit Court, which jurisdiction South Dakota also falls under, but may still end up in the Supreme Court.
It has become necessary to speak to the courts in the loudest of terms. Same-sex unions can't perform the functions of marriage, and the lie that a mother and father are inconsequential to a child endangers our society.

Only option
A pregnant mother of young children who develops cancer or another life-threatening illness should have access to the full range of medical treatments.
In many illnesses, effective treatment - which may endanger the life of the fetus - needs to be started before the woman comes to the brink of death. Treatment decisions should be made between the patient, her doctor and her family without interference from the state. A man in South Dakota would expect no less.
South Dakota already has restrictions that prevent abortion on demand. Abortion is always the choice of last resort, but sometimes it is the only option to save a woman's life or preserve her health.

Support liberty
I am opposed to the efforts of the extremists to restrict the rights of individuals over their own bodies. I believe in the adage "your rights end at the tip of my nose."
I have no problem with any person making their own decision on their own bodies. What I do oppose is the efforts of the conservative extremists who attempt to impose their own religious beliefs on others.
The extremists have now gone too far as to remove abortion as an option for those who have become pregnant against their own will as a result of rape or incest. I strongly believe that such issues should be left to a woman and her doctor.
The Republican Party, which I joined when I was old enough to register to vote, was one which supported individual rights and opposed government intervention in the private rights of individuals. I oppose the efforts of Napoli and Elli to restrict the right of self-determination.
Please join me in supporting individual liberty by voting No on 6. Oppose the extremists. Support self-determination. Vote for freedom.

My message
I have a message for the people who are telling the voters in South Dakota that HB1215 is too extreme and goes too far. You don't know what you're talking about!
You have never walked in my shoes. I was raped. I got pregnant. I had an abortion. You didn't!
I cringe every time I hear that excuse. I'm tired of being exploited by the supporters of the abortion industry!
You not only insult every person who was conceived in rape, but you are using a terrible tragedy to keep on doing the very thing that almost destroyed my life and did destroy my child's life. Rape is nothing compared to the trauma of abortion.
My husband and I, at our own expense, have been traveling the state since June to deliver this message, and we are joined by others who, like us, are so grateful to have this window of opportunity to see an end to the killing and a start of the healing.
There is nothing compassionate about abortion, not even to a rape victim. It brings death and destruction to everyone involved and our society as a whole. We all pay the price.

I am writing this letter in support of Lance Russell for Seventh Circuit Court judge. I know Lance to be a strong family man with a strong, conservative philosophy. He is very interested in protecting private property rights, as well as the rights of the individual.
His record as state's attorney shows him to be effective and efficient. He is tough on criminals, while being fair with defendants and witnesses in upholding the laws of South Dakota.
As a judge, I fully believe Lance would conduct his court in the same manner and be a true asset to the court system.

It's too hard?
Thursday at the Rapid City Civic Association candidate night at North Middle School, several Republican incumbents reminded us what hard work it is and how complicated the issues are when working as state legislators. We keep hearing from Republicans that issues are "more complicated than people think."
I appreciate their sacrifice and hard work in Pierre, especially since the Legislature itself is, in my opinion, extremely underpaid. However, it's a little insulting to be told how hard it is in Pierre. Most of us struggle every day with the difficult economic, educational and health-care issues they have not successfully addressed, while the Legislature continues to support an unfair, extremely regressive tax system and pass legislation that is clearly crafted for political success.
It's time for real leadership in the areas of jobs, health care and education. But Republicans say: "It's too hard!"
Capable, qualified people, Democrats, and others, too, are saying, "Yes, change for the better is hard - so let's get to work now."
Tom Katus is capable. Tom Katus' qualifications to serve the people of District 32, Rapid City, and South Dakota are commanding and impressive. It is complicated, but it's not too hard for Tom Katus.

Based on the law
Judge A.P. "Pete" Fuller has served well the people of Fall River, Custer and Pennington counties. I have known and worked with him for many years. Before being appointed judge, Pete Fuller was appointed by the Supreme Court of South Dakota to serve on the Board of Bar Examiners, where I was also a member. He took seriously the responsibility to test and investigate the character and fitness of applicants wanting to practice law in South Dakota.
When he was appointed as judge, he brought to the bench his vast and respected experience as a lawyer in private practice. He successfully made the transition from being an advocate in the courtroom to that of a well-respected Judge.
He knows that his decisions can have far-reaching implications and he takes that responsibility very seriously. He works incredibly hard to ensure that his decisions are based on the law and that justice is served. He has no political or private agenda.

Gutter politics
I want to thank all the wonderful people who have called to tell us that the horrible TV commercials running to defeat my husband of nearly 38 years, Elli Schwiesow and Dennis Schmidt, that they are sickened by these negative ads.
We were told Stan Adelstein was going to run this type of advertising and was willing to spend whatever it took to defeat my husband and other conservatives. I hope Mr. Adelstein spent a lot of money to help the economy of our local TV stations.
I have already been through the worst of the threatening phone calls back in March, April, May and June. After having men and even women call me and threaten to rape me, kill our family and my husband, Adelstein's petty TV ads just shows the type of person he really is, and the gutter politics he'll use to destroy a good man and his family.
There was a time when I had some respect for Mr. Adelstein's business leadership. The saddest part of his vicious attacks on my husband, Elli Schwiesow and Dennis Schmidt is, this is the lowest form of politics I have ever witnessed.

Uncomfortable
Gov. Rounds, speaking on SDPB "South Dakota Forum" (Oct. 25), said he was comfortable with his decision on HB1215 and had comforting words for both sides of the abortion debate.
Supporters of the bill shouldn't worry, because if defeated, they could come back with a more pragmatic approach that's acceptable to more voters. Those urging defeat of the law could be comforted by the knowledge that it would be immediately challenged, wouldn't go into effect for up to five years, if ever, and the legal bills for both sides would be paid by the state.
His words offer little comfort now that this divisive legislation has turned neighbor against neighbor, doctor against doctor and church against church.
Prohibition didn't end or even reduce drinking, it just drove it underground. Today a woman can get counseling from physicians, family and clergy and may choose not to end that pregnancy.
If Referred Law 6 passes, she may be forced to hide her pregnancy until she can end it herself with only the counseling of a back-alley abortionist or a coat hanger. A comforting thought.
I'm one Republican who's comfortable voting for Jack Billion.

Lot of confusion
There is a lot of confusion surrounding Referred Law 6. Although the phrase, "exception for rape and incest," never occurs in the bill, Section 3 makes it very clear that any woman can use contraceptive measures which prevent a pregnancy up to the time that a pregnancy can be determined, thus providing for victims of rape and incest through emergency contraceptives.
The phrase, "exception for the health of the mother," never occurs in the bill either. However, Section 4 makes it very clear that medical treatment can be provided for the mother, even if that treatment results in the accidental death or unintentional injury to the unborn child. This would include treatment for cancer, heart disease, or any life-threatening health issue as long as the doctor made an effort to save both mother and baby.
This bill does make exceptions for rape and incest victims and the health of the mother. However, these exceptions do not allow for the intentional killing of the unborn child, which is what abortion is.
The innocent victim of rape will only add to her pain if she commits a violent act toward another innocent victim, her unborn child.

No. 2 industry
Brian Aust, director for the Associated School Boards of South Dakota, correctly states that the required number of school days would remain at 175. However, he incorrectly states that Measure 3 would push the end-of-school date further into the spring and summer months.
In our school district, Hill City, our students go to class the day after Labor Day and get out of class Memorial Day. How is it that this can be done?
Perhaps Mr. Aust should contact our superintendent and see what kind of magic wand he waves to accomplish this.
Should tourism interests play a role in this issue? You bet! The No. 2 industry in South Dakota is tourism. We need seasonal employees, often teachers and students. We need to extend the time for family vacations so that our fellow South Dakotans can plan vacations during the last two weeks of August.
The money earned from summer jobs helps teachers pay for continued education and helps students pay for advanced education. Summer jobs also provide invaluable work experience for students.
Vote yes on Measure 3!

Stop the inhumanity
I thought it might be good for S.D. voters to know this fact. The same groups that are telling us that Referred Law 6 goes too far are today, Oct. 26, arguing in front of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit for partial-birth abortion. They are arguing for the right to deliver full-term babies feet first, puncture the back of their head, and then suck out their brains just before their head is delivered.
Also in California's election this November, these groups are telling voters that parents should not have the right to know that there child is going to have an abortion.
As you can see, anything that keeps them from performing an abortion, they label as going too far. Even preventing partial-birth abortion and parents knowing of their child's abortion, they say goes to far.
Don't be deceived by Planned Parenthood, Healthy Families and abortion proponents this November. Vote yes on Referred Law 6 and put a stop to this inhumanity.

Spirit light
Please take time to think through the important social issues of this election before voting. However hard it may be, place yourself in the position of someone most affected by your vote.
It might be your Christian co-worker, your pregnant, unwed neighbor, your gay relative, or dare I say, even an unborn child. Try to imagine their fears, their pain and their sense of being disrespected. Understand their anger and frustration. Accept where they are coming from in the debate.
Next, draw into a quiet, still place to reflect on ballot measures that cause you uncertainty. Use the power of your reason, education and life experience to come as close to resolution as you can.
Finally, in stillness, open your mind to the spirit light within. All of us have one, and it will speak to you and guide you to the best solution to any dilemma. You'll feel the right answer touch you as a sense of calmness and sureness about your decision.

Then came Planned Parenthood for the mothers and their "unwanted" unborn. Americans did not speak out because mothers have a "right" to kill their unborn.
Then came Dr. Buehner, spokesman for Planned Parenthood, who hails the hurting of mothers and the killing of their unborn.
Then came Congress, giving Planned Parenthood $272 million yearly of taxpayers' money to help "purify the race" by aborting Native Americans, Black, Hispanics, Asians and the "unwanted" poor. Who has stopped Congress?

Justice for all
South Dakota has an opportunity to approve of a landmark civil rights law, the first in our nation since 1973 that would grant full equal protection under the law to our unborn children.
For those who have misgivings about this law passed by our state lawmakers, please consider that "equal protection" has to mean what it says. Every innocent unborn life must be given equal rights to be safe from violence, no matter what the circumstances surrounding his or her conception were. That is the American way of justice for all.
Many women who became pregnant through violent attacks have carried their babies to term. Some have let their babies be adopted, and others have raised and loved them. Remember that God is the true creator of all children, and He will assist all who turn to Him and allow Him to bring goodness out of suffering.
Can any of us confidently claim that we have no ancestors who were conceived by rape or incest? Perhaps we all do, and you and I would not be here arguing about civil rights if even one of our ancestors had not been allowed to be born.

Over and over again
The supporters of HB1215 claim that there is recourse available for victims of incest! Incest is not a one-time occurrence. It happens over and over again.
The victim is often threatened by her abuser not to tell. How could she have the courage to go to the doctor each time it happens to get a prescription for emergency contraception and then try to find a pharmacy to fill it?

We've had enough of the pro-death mentality of the liberal Democrats.
Stan Adelstein has proven he is a Republican in name only when he supports Tom Katus and calls HB1215, Referred Law 6, too extreme.
What is extreme about letting innocent pre-born babies live? Isn't 50 million precious children being killed in their mothers' wombs a horrible disgrace in this great country, America?

You've fallen down
Regarding the ministerial group urging "No on 6." Dear Pastors for A Moral Choice:
As a member of the Executive Committee on the Rapid City Ministerial Association and a pro-life pastor in Rapid City, I could not disagree with the Pastors for a Moral Choice more.
You speak of desiring God's blessings and direction, and yet you reject His ways? Abortion is murder. There is nothing moral about taking a life. But it is "moral, just and compassionate" to let that baby live!
Years ago, your denominational organizations began questioning the inerrancy of God's Word, the Bible. It is no wonder that now you question its relevancy.
More pastors, priests and leaders of Bible-based ministries in South Dakota will be standing up for life on Nov. 7. I invite you to join us.

Lesser of evils
When I look at our choices for government, it appears once again we vote for the lesser of evils. Rounds' statement in the March 31 Journal stated: "He would not pledge to serve all four years if elected. I never look past an election in front of me. I don't reason why I should make any obligation beyond this election in front of me." Translation: if something better comes along, I quit and Dennis Daugaard takes over. Where does he stand on issues?
Rounds' church leader visits him and the abortion bill is signed and the execution is stopped. Who's governing our state?
Billion and Gerber are both unknowns but believe Bear Butte should be given back or shared with the Indians. Anyone who has visited a reservation and seen how a majority dispose of their trash would object. Indians were responsible for the fire that burned most of the trees off Bear Butte but paid nothing for the cost of suppressing the fire.
I don't know Steven Willis, but he apparently is the only one who realizes that just throwing more money at education isn't going to solve everything but felt we should spend less money on elaborate buildings.

Keep the ban
I am a Christian Democrat. I don't support war of any kind and I support the abortion ban. Murder of any kind, in God's eyes, is wrong.
Jesus said in Matthew 5:21: "You who have heard that it was said to those of old: 'You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.'"
There are women who get raped, who in times have a child as a result. Adoption is a choice if you don't care for the baby. As a Christian man, I pray for your healing.
We need to keep the abortion ban so South Dakota can live by God's laws, not ours. Under God, the people rule. God bless you!

The state Legislature, like Congress, is enacting laws without providing for the funding which will require cuts in current programs.
The abortion law states life begins at conception. This means anyone on state retirement will now be eligible for retirement nine months sooner with less input to the system. More importantly, everyone will have nine months of Medicare/Medicaid eligibility that the state will apparently have to pick up before federal recognition of age kicks in.
These costs have not been budgeted for any more than the millions of legal costs to defend the law have been. They say other states' residents are going to pay for those costs. Right!
So what will get cut? Probably education. The governor and House leaders say teacher pay is not an issue in this state, so they might as well just cut all education funding and just tell us what they want us to know. They are well on their way to that now anyway!
To steal a line from Robin Williams, "Politicians, like diapers, need to be changed often and for the same reason."
That time is now!

Last word
Pam Hemmingsen's (House candidate for District 32) campaign literature says, "If your views are not the same as the extremists in Pierre, then it makes sense to vote for a leader who is not afraid to speak up for your rational views."
If your view is one that supports abortion-on-demand and gay marriage ... yes, Ms. Hemmingsen is a leader who champions both issues.
If your views lean toward pro-life and traditional marriage (defined as between one man and one woman), Ms. Hemmingsen is not your best choice.
Ms. Hemmingsen states that her views are "rational." I guess that makes me "irrational," because I don't consider being pro-life and pro-traditional marriage as "extreme." I'm also guessing there's a lot of us "extremists" out here who are sick and tired of being beat-up by a bunch of liberals because we hold fast to our moral convictions.
But guess what, Ms. Hemmingsen? We extremists will have the last word on Nov. 7, and the last word won't be Hemmingsen.
