PIERRE--The minimum hunting age in South Dakota would be lowered from 12 to 10-- for small game and big game alike n under a bill passed by a legislative committee Thursday morning in Pierre.
Rep. Mike Buckingham, R-Rapid City, is the prime sponsor of House Bill 1305.
Buckingham, whose original bill would have had no minimum age for hunting small game, told members of the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee that the bill would allow parents to get kids interested in hunting and teach them hunting safety.
Rep. Gordon Howie, R-Rapid City, who is on the agriculture committee, voted for the measure. “Hunting is a family sport,” Howie said.
Buckingham said after the hearing that parents should decide when kids are ready to hunt. “Parents who care about their kids never make inappropriate decisions,” he said after the hearing.
The committee voted 9 to 4 to recommend approval of the measure and send it to the House floor.
