Free motorcycle courses offered

Motorcycle riders have an opportunity to enroll for free in the experienced motorcycle riders courses offered through the South Dakota Safety Council in Rapid City and Sturgis.
Because of a federal grant, the safety council is offering the advanced-rider classes for free for a limited time, according to Ted Erlewine, the council’s West River coordinator for motorcycle safety.
The classes normally cost $60.
Riders still must write a check for $60 to the S.D. Safety Council to sign up. If they finish the class, they get their money back, Erlewine said.
He said the offer for the free classes will last until the federal grant money runs out statewide.
The experienced-rider course is designed for motorcycle riders who are already licensed and ride frequently, Erlewine said.
To qualify, riders must have a valid motorcycle license and must provide their own motorcycle with proof of insurance and ownership.
The class runs about seven hours at Rapid City training locations, Erlewine said. The classes are usually taught on weekend days.
Applications are available at Black Hills Power Sports, Rice Honda Suzuki and Black Hills Harley-Davidson in Rapid City.
Slots also are still available for the beginner motorcycle rider courses being taught this summer. The beginner course costs $75.
