State awards grants for school nutrition and fitness

Seventeen South Dakota schools will share $71,521 in grants supporting nutrition and physical activities for school and out-of-school programs.
The recent grant awards are funded through federal maternal and child-health dollars and a National Governors Association Healthy Kids, Health America grant.
South Dakota is one of 10 states that received a $100,000 Health Kids grant directed for child obesity prevention in July.
Local programs receiving a grant are: Belle Fourche Area Community Center, Camp Oasis Out of School Time program, $3,342; Belle Fourche Public Schools, Extension Service Kid Quest program, $4,430; Rapid City School District, fitness equipment and nutrition education, $2,335; Rapid City Youth and Family Services Inc. OST, implement Girls and Mothers Excelling through Sports program, $4,250; and Spearfish, Lutheran Social Services, Canyon Hills Center, exercise equipment and repairs, $4,934.
