A judge denied a bond reduction request Tuesday for the Rapid Valley man accused of abusing several malamute dogs and assaulting a sheriff's deputy.
Chad L. Cooper, 36, is charged with one count of aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer, one count of simple assault domestic violence and five counts of inhumane treatment of an animal.
He pleaded not guilty earlier this month to all of the charges.
Cooper's bond is currently set at $100,000 cash or surety.
He has been in jail for 68 days.
Cooper's attorney, Jay Davis, said his client has no criminal history and has lived in the Rapid City area for the past 13 years.
Davis said Cooper plans to live with his parents in Black Hawk if he is able to post bond.
"I don't believe he's a serious flight risk," Davis said.
Davis asked 7th Circuit Judge Janine Kern to lower Cooper's bond to a "more modest amount."
Tracey Decker, deputy state's attorney for Pennington County, objected to a bond reduction in the case, saying she believes Cooper poses a threat to the victims in the case and the community.
