City receives federal funds for transit system

Rapid City will receive nearly $650,000 from the Federal Transit Administration to help pay for the renovation of the former Zigg's building on Centre Street and the purchase of additional Dial-a-Ride vehicles.

Rich Sagen, the city's Rapid Transit System manager, said the funding, which was announced Thursday by Sen. Tim Johnson, will allow the city to purchase four additional Dial-a-Ride buses, bringing the city's total to 17.

About $372,000 of the money received will pay part of the federal share of the building project. The city earmarked $1.5 million in 2012 funds three years ago for a building to house police evidence storage, and parts of the traffic and transit divisions.

The project's overall cost is about $3.92 million. The federal transit agency is paying about $2.1 million of the cost.
