DEADWOOD — Kadoka’s Tia Carlson won her first varsity cross country race, and her teammate Amy Neinott finished second to lead Kadoka to the team title at Tomahawk Golf Course in Deadwood on Tuesday.
“This is the first time I've ever won on varsity,” said Carlson. “I just ran hard and prepared. Last week, I ran a bad race and I decided to improve. As a team, we’ve training, working hard, getting our miles in and it paid off today.”
Carlson’s effort helped the Kougars to the team title with a team total of 27 points. Custer was second with 47 and Hot Springs was third with 72.
Carlson came in with a time of 16 minutes, 04 seconds just seven seconds ahead of Neinott who finished at 16:13.
“If we stay focused, stay healthy and compete smart we do well,” said Kadoka head coach Harry Weller. “The girls are focused and dedicated, they want to go back to state and win it. Whether we do or not I don’t know, but I know they’re ready. All of my top three girls have won a race this year and Tia did an excellent job today.”
Pine Ridge’s Jessica Tall finished third with a time of 16:24 and Lead-Deadwood’s Bailey Voss came in fourth at 16:33.
In the boys division, Hill City’s Andy Coy won for the second straight race, and his fourth in five races this season with a time of 16:54. Belle Fourche’s Colton Njos came in second place at 17:26 and Hot Springs’ Tobie Spitzer rounded out the top three with an 18:23 mark.
Hot Springs came away with the team championship because of Spitzer’s strong run. His teammate Danny Watson finished in fifth place with a time of 18:37.
“We performed better today than we have been,” said Hot Springs head coach John Entwisle, “Tobie ran an outstanding race for us today and is really getting geared up for racing time. Danny Watson also ran a great race and was pushing Tobie a little bit so that was good to see. Those two running together kind of helps this out.”
Hot Springs finished with 56 points, Custer was second with 58 and Pine Ridge came in third with 60.
