Epiphany feast planned at St. John Orthodox
RAPID CITY — St. John Orthodox Church, 601 Flormann St., will celebrate the feast of Theophany (Epiphany) on Monday, Jan. 5, with Divine Liturgy beginning at 5 p.m. and concluding with the Great Sanctification of Water.
This is one of the oldest and most important feast days of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Theophany commemorates the manifestation of the Holy Trinity, which took place when Christ was baptized in the Jordan River.
From the feast of Theophany until the beginning of the season before Great Lent, it is traditional for the parish priest to bless the homes of his parishioners with the “Jordan Water,” blessed at the second Great Sanctification of Water on the Feast of Theophany.
For more information, call 721-7906.
‘Barely Organized’ group at St. Andrews
RAPID CITY — St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church is beginning a new monthly program on Wednesday, Jan. 7. Called “Barely Organized Religion,” it will convene at 6 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month at Bully Blends Coffee and Tea Shop, 410 Fifth St., and continue until the conversation runs out.
It is designed to help participants search for answers to spiritual questions that are faced in everyday life. Each evening will start with a suggested topic of discussion centered on what individuals and groups can do to make those in the immediate vicinity a bit happier, a little less confused, according to a news release.
“We will gather to pray for strength, determination and the willpower to do instead of just to pray,” said one of the organizers. “We want to become instead of merely to wish.”
The outreach is open to anyone of any belief.
