Area Scene: Hardrockers ink lineman from Bismarck

RAPID CITY — The South Dakota School of Mines football program grabbed another quality recruit in Andrew Munson.

Munson, a 6-foot-2, 245-pound lineman for the Century High School Patriots in Bismarck, N.D., played several positions for CHS, spending time on the offensive line, at defensive end and also at tight end.

“Andrew will be a great addition to our team,” Mines head coach Dan Kratzer said. “He is an every down player that is quick and strong. He will have the opportunity to compete at several positions in our program.”

Munson helped the Patriots to a 7-5 campaign in 2008, and he received Western Dakota Association all-conference honors as both an offensive and defensive lineman and was a Class AAA all-state selection as an offensive lineman as well.

Maier goes 2-for-2 at National Western Stock Show: Bull rider Corey Maier of Timber Lake is the only competitor to have completed two successful rides during the opening weekend of the National Western Stock Show on Saturday and Sunday in the Denver Coliseum.

Maier was third in the first round and second in the second round for a total score of 162 points. It put him 75 points ahead of second-place Cory McFadden of Coleman, Texas, who won the first round with a score of 87 points on Flying Five Rodeo’s Fire Water.

Wyatt Hancock, of Taylor, Ariz., and the younger brother of 2000 World Champion Bull Rider Cody Hancock, had the early lead in the bareback riding with 155 points on two head. Hancock won the first round with an 80-point ride on Big Bend Rodeo’s Faded Dice and finished second in Round 2.

All of the contestants at Denver compete in two back-to-back perfomances over the course of the next two weeks. The top 12 at the conclusion of the preliminary rounds will advance to the finals, in which they will compete for about $300,000 in prize money and handmade sterling silver gold trophy buckles.

The rodeo resumes Thursday and runs through Jan. 25.

State wrestling tickets on sale: Advance reserve tickets for the 2009 state Class A wrestling tournament are now on sale at the Rapid City Central High School activities office.

The event is Feb. 27 and Feb. 28 at Watertown Civic Arena. Ticket prices for adults are $27 for the entire tournament or $9 per single session. Student prices are $15 for the tournament or $5 for a single session. Only season tickets for the entire tournament may be purchased in advance.

Tickets may be ordered through the Central activities 0ffice through Jan. 26. Payment must

be made when ordering, and there will be no refunds.
