A Feb. 24 release from J.C. Penney Company detailed plans for store closings around the nation as part of the company's "continuing effort to advance sustainable growth and long-term profitability". The list of 138 planned closures, released this week, include four stores in South Dakota (Pierre, Yankton, Mitchell and Watertown), three North Dakota locations (Dickinson, Jamestown and Wahpeton), and a downtown store in Sheridan, Wyo.

Affected stores will begin the liquidation process on or about April 17 and will close in June. About 5,000 employees will be affected, although outplacement and/or relocation support services will be provided.
