To be perfectly honest, it's been a few years since a West River Class B girls basketball team was a real threat to the East River powers.
Not since the great run the Newell Irrigators were on that ended with a 42-40 2OT loss in the 2011 Class B state title game has there been a girls team in that class capable of winning a state championship.
I don't know if Jones County is a state title contender, but their win over Summit at the Hanson Classic on Saturday has to give them a little confidence.
I don't know how good Summit is but there's tradition there and the Eagles came to Mitchell undefeated. That's a good win.
Madison Mathews has been a very good player for Jones County for quite awhile now. It will be interesting to see if the all-stater (who had 25 in the win over Summit) and her teammates are contenders as the season moves on.
