Henry

South Dakota School of Mines & Technology men's head basketball coach Jason Henry talks to the team during practice on Monday at the King Center. The Hardrockers open the season on Oct. 30 at South Dakota State in an exhibition game.

I got a chance to see the S.D. Mines men's basketball team up close in an exhibition contest for the first time this season as they fell 76-67 to a Rapid City area all-star team led by Adam Templeton and Matt Martin on Friday night.

First off, the 'Rockers aren't going to run into too many guys that are as good as Martin or Templeton this season, so fans shouldn't get too worried about the loss. Those two are really good and Keaton Cummings (former DWU player from RC Central) was a force around the basket all night.

But with that said, the 'Rockers do need somebody to step up and hit an outside shot to loosen things up. And it's probably not a great sign that they struggled offensively against a group of guys whose athletic primes are behind them (for the most part). But I'm willing to chalk it up to a bad night and maybe a little overconfidence.

Coach Henry and Coach Glenn will always have the 'Rockers well prepared and playing hard, but this team looks like it's going to struggle scoring at times this year.

We'll see, but somebody (my picks would be Jordan Dick or freshman Travis Schock) is going to have to bring some firepower on the perimeter for Mines ... or at least the threat of it. There is no Rusty Kocon, Ryan Messick, Rob McCarthy or AJ Trennepohl on this team, however, and it could make things tough for Konor Kulas and Andrew Rebol in the paint.
