The annual crop tour at Wall is set for Sunday, June 24, beginning at 1 p.m. at Exit 109 off Interstate 90.
Researchers will discuss the performance of winter wheat in rotation with corn, sunflower, safflowers, field pea and chickpea, according to South Dakota State University West River agronomist Thandiwe Nleya.
At 2:30 p.m., the focus moves to spring grain variety trials and annual forages. Take Exit 107 off I-90 and travel for about 4.5 miles north on Cedar Butte Road. Turn west on 229th Street and travel for about 1.25 miles. The plots are on the south side of the road.
At 3:30 p.m., producers will tour the winter wheat variety trial, winter wheat planting date trial and broadleaf crops-winter wheat sequence blocks. Take Exit 107 and travel for about 5.5 miles north on Cedar Butte Road. Turn west on 228th Street and travel for about 2.5 miles. The plots are on the south side of the road.
Broadleaf crops are the focus at 4:30 p.m. The trials are across the road from the winter wheat trials and include chickpea, field pea, safflower and camelina variety trials and chickpea population and chickpea seed size studies.
The Pennington County Crop Improvement Association will host a watermelon feed at 5:30 p.m.
Presenters include Nleya, SDSU research associate John Rickertsen, SDSU agronomy educator Sandy Huber and senior research technician Bruce Swan.
