Tim, Sheila and Alex Nold hope people will come to their soon-to-be-open coffee shop in Black Hawk for their morning brew and stay for the yummy pastries.
Tim’s wife, Sheila, and son, Alex, will open the doors at the Wired Woodsman Coffee Shop on Monday, Sept. 25, at 7211 Black Hawk Road near the intersection of Peaceful Pines Road and Sturgis Road.
Nold is a former big-company sales manager who started a hobby of Dutch oven cooking in 2012, eventually turning that avocation into a vocation, Old West Dutch Oven Catering.
The Nold’s had been catering out of a mobile trailer and needed a bigger kitchen. Tim settled on the former location of the Longhorn Restaurant on the south end of the BJ’s Country Store building.
That solved his kitchen needs, but what to do with the empty restaurant itself?
“The front part went with it, so we decided we better do something with it, since I’m paying the lease on it anyway,” Tim said.
They decided a coffee house would be the ticket in busy Black Hawk. Along with full-specialty coffees served for carryout orders, Alex, a barista, will offer a sit-down boutique coffee menu, “china cups, real silverware, the whole nine yards,” Nold said.
Adding a contrast to the china and silverware ambience will be a rustic barnwood interior with Bluegrass music playing in the background. Alex will also serve locally-roasted Dark Canyon Coffee exclusively, Tim said.
Nold will also offer Dutch oven pastries made fresh daily in the kitchen, including a longtime favorite, a German Chocolate Lava Cake, cake batter infused with dollops of frosting, poured over a coconut base and baked.
“We really think the fresh pastry is going to be a big draw,” Tim said.
Once the Wired Woodsman starts perking, hours will be 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Her current job is marketing and communications specialist with the Deadwood Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau.
Nasser’s first day at her new job will be Sept. 25. The Chamber receives nearly one-third of tourism sales tax revenues collected by the city of Sturgis. Nasser succeeds Heidi Kruse, who resigned after four years with the chamber to take a job with the Meade School District.
Granite a Green Dealer
Granite Buick GMC of Rapid City is part of an exclusive group of General Motors dealers.
According to a release from GM, the dealership is one of 146 dealerships nationwide and the only one in South Dakota to be certified as a GM Green Dealer since the program started in 2014.
Green Dealers are judged on their environmental sustainability efforts. Granite ranked well in energy reduction, renewable energy use, water conservation efforts, recycling, maintenance of onsite natural habitats and community outreach, according to the release.
Among the green practices in place at the dealership located off of I-90 Exit 61, Granite uses geothermal heat generated and stored in the earth; uses high-efficiency LED lighting; recycles oil from the service department to build and repair South Dakota highways; filters water throughout the facility for return to the natural resource supply; and preserved wetlands for water fowl and birds on the property.
“We are really excited to provide eco-friendly practices to not only our community but also our state,” Troy Claymore, managing partner of Granite Buick GMC, said in the release.
