Agate Fossil Bed National Monument rangers will lead guided tours through the James H. Cook Gallery for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
The times for the tours are 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and will last from 30 – 45 minutes. Learn more about Native American culture and a unique friendship between members of different cultures. Items in the Cook Gallery were gifts given to James Cook from Oglala Lakota Red Cloud, members of the Northern Cheyenne and others. The range of items from Red Cloud’s shirt and three generations of pipe bags to items that were used every day suggest that these gifts were given to James Cook for safekeeping. Join the rangers in discovering the culture of these peoples and their friendship with James Cook and his family.
Rangers will have stories about some of the individual items and the time period when the Native Americans visited at the Agate Springs Ranch where James Cook and his family lived.
