SPEARFISH | Anita Haeder, budget assistant, has been continuously employed at Black Hills State University for 50 years. It was announced this week that BHSU will name the Campus Garden after Haeder in honor of her five decades of service to the University.

Haeder joined the BHSU staff immediately after graduating from high school. A BH staff member went to Spearfish High School to interview her. That job offer turned into the longest employment ever at BHSU and one of the longest for the entire state of South Dakota.

Haeder began her work as a secretary in the physical plant in 1968 when Meredith Freeman was serving as President of BH. She worked as a cashier, switchboard operator, administrative assistant, personnel officer, personal director and then human resources director. She also served as HR assistant, purchasing assistant and now serves as budget assistant.

Through the years at BHSU, Haeder’s work has always focused on the people at the University, and her role as human resources director provided her the opportunity to work with nearly all BHSU employees. In 50 years of service, Haeder has experienced and successfully adapted to ever-evolving technology changes, campus transformations and university processes.

Haeder has continuously been successful by adopting a positive outlook. “The work is always interesting and always changing," she said. "There’s never been a dull moment.”

With more than 100,000 hours of service to the University, BHSU publicly recognizes Haeder for her golden work anniversary by naming the BHSU Campus Garden in honor of Anita Haeder, also acknowledging her continued passion for gardening. The Anita Haeder Campus Garden will showcase her name as a tribute to her long and exemplary service to BHSU.
