New Year's Eve 2018 is right around the corner, and it's time to start making plans. Fortunately, there are a plethora of events happening in the Black Hills area to kick off the New Year with a bang.
The Hotel Alex Johnson is just one of the many establishments in the area hosting a New Year’s Eve celebration. The historic hotel has been a staple in the downtown Rapid City area for more than 75 years and has held New Year’s Eve events for 11 years.
The festivities kick off at 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, in the Hotel Alex Johnson Ballroom. The only thing different about this year’s celebration is the theme: a Black & White party. Attendees are encouraged to put on their best black (and white) tie attire.
Director of sales Jessica Pulscher said the decision for each year’s theme is a team effort.
“We just kind of throw ideas out there and vote internally. It’s a good way to involve the entire team,” she said.
Previous themes for the event have been a circus-themed “Big Top New Year Party” and a masquerade ball, “Unmask the New Year.”
Pulscher said the event garners about 500 attendees throughout the evening and she expects a similar turnout for this year. There is a bonus of a complimentary drink ticket for the first 25 attendees in the door.
The hotel is also offering packages for those wanting to enjoy all the perks of the hotel. The VIP in the Mezzanine package gives party-goers access to a VIP Party Area in the Ballroom Mezzanine with a private cash bar and appetizers. The hotel also offers room packages with access to the Vertex Sky Bar and breakfast for two on New Year’s Day.
The event will have music by Tiki Man Entertainment, drink specials and a Ping-Pong cash and prize shootout. The evening will wrap up with the annual ball drop from the 10th floor of the hotel at midnight. The ball drop has become the centerpiece of Downtown Rapid City's celebrations, and hundreds fill Sixth Street in front of the hotel to ring in the New Year. There is no charge to watch the ball drop from outside.
Standard access tickets for the party are $15 and advanced tickets are available at the hotel front desk. Call 342-1210 or visit alexjohnson.com for more information.
