The Spearfish Rec Center's "It's a Great Day...for a 5K!" series continues and rings in the holidays Saturday with the Jingle Bell Run 5K.
The event will see racers getting on their marks at the ice rink of Spearfish City Campground. Racers are encouraged to wear costumes to get in the holiday spirit, according to Rec and Aquatics Specialist Brett Rauterkus.
"Last year we had a Mr. and Mrs. Claus running, we've had elves, some reindeer, lots of stuff of that nature," Rauterkus said.
Prizes will be given for best costume as well as for top runners. The Spearfish Rec Center will give prizes including water bottles, earbuds and bags.
Rauterkus noted that the path, which is regularly maintained and allows for a flat surface run, should be cleaned off unless there is a storm the night before. In the event of a cancellation, news will be posted on the Spearfish Rec Center website.
Rauterkus said he believes participants are happiest to get outside before the holidays at a time when it isn't always easy to do so.
"You can get stuck inside for one reason or another at this time of year," Rauterkus said. "It's a good opportunity to get exercise and enjoy the outdoors before the holidays start to take up your time ... and I'm sure people enjoy the costumes, too."
