Those who love the outdoors have a big weekend ahead of them in Lead with the Winterfest on Friday and Saturday.

The event starts Friday with a Lead Chamber of Commerce mixer and kickoff party, featuring a chili and dessert cookoff. Friday will also see the beginning of the all-weekend-long Medallian Scavenger Hunt (clues can be found on the Lead Area Chamber of Commerce Facebook page) and a window decorating contest on Main Street.

The outdoor fun starts in earnest on Saturday with a snowmobile poker fun run (bring your own vehicle) at the Steel Wheel Trading Post, while a Snow Yoga event will be held Saturday morning at the Sanford Lab Visitor Center's Observation Deck.

"Doing yoga outdoors in the cold is becoming a big thing across the nation," said Karen Kean, executive director of the Chamber. "It's a novelty, it'll give you a great view of the open cut, and it's a great way to become fit at any age."

Those who wish to participate in Snow Yoga are advised to pre-register by calling 605-584-1100, and to wear loose-fitting layers to stay warm.

The Boys & Girls Club of the Black Hills will host an Ugly Sweater Fun Run in the Visitor Center Parking Lot, while the Visitor Center will host an "Arctic Golf" event outdoors. Manuel Brothers Park, meanwhile, invites visitors to try fat tire bikes, show shoeing, Nordic skiing and more in their Try-It Winter Sports event.

The day will end with multiple music events, followed by a grand finale party with a bonfire and fireworks in the Visitor Center parking lot.

"The fireworks over the open cut are always a huge hit," Kean said.

The whole event, however, will thrill Lead residents and visitors.

"There's community spirit in all of this," Kean said.
