Racers will hope for the luck o' the Irish this Saturday with the Leprechaun Leap 5K Run/Walk.
Participants for the event, part of the Spearfish Rec Center's "It's a Great Day...for a 5K!" series, will meet in the Black Hills State University gravel lot across from the football stadium. The race will take place on the university's recreation path.
"One of the nice things about the whole series is we use the majority of the rec path throughout," said Brett Rauterkus, rec and aquatics specialist. "So this is another section of the path we try to include. If you run through most of these, you'll run pretty much the whole path."
Rauterkus said that the path was ideal for many runners, as well as those who prefer to walk with a stroller or dog (leash required).
"People know it's a safe place to run with a consistent surface the whole way," Rauterkus said.
Prizes will be given for best costume as well as for top male and female runners. Prizes include drawstring backpacks and water bottles.
"Lots of the time people will dress with handbands and shamrock glasses," Rauterkus said. "People love the spirit of a fun run."
Rauterkus said that what most participants appreciated about the runs was the camaraderie that came with the series.
"Especially for those who've done the whole series, you're running again with the same people while you're trying to better your own time with each race," Rauterkus said.
