GALLERIES

Nov. 16-17: Artist Frederico Vigil will present a lecture at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at the South Dakota Public Broadcasting's West River Bureau office at 415 Main St. An artists reception will be held Nov. 17 at the Apex Gallery on the SDSM&T campus. Vigil's original composition are on exhibit in the Apex Gallery at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. Often referred to as the "Michelangelo of New Mexico," in 2014 Vigil traveled to Albuquerque, Spain, to create a fresco at the Salon De Plenos (city hall). This gallery showing includes work from this landmark sister city project. Vigil's art will remain on exhibit through Dec. 1.

Nov. 17: Joint Opening Reception for The Curious Art of Jerry Root & Unwrapped, from 5 to 7 p.m., Dahl Arts Center, Rapid City. This special double exhibit opening is in conjunction with the opening night of the Holiday Art Market. The Curious Art of Jerry Root ​brings to life the vivid imagination of Jerry Root. In addition to his hand-built and carved ships in bottles, this show includes everything from animal wood carvings to paintings to hand-built firearms and his personally designed signs. Unwrapped features small original works by local artists, just in time for the holiday season.

Nov 18: An opening reception for “Postcards Now and Then,” the new mini-exhibit at the Tri-State Museum and Visitor Center, Belle Fourche, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cake and coffee will be served. “Postcards Now and Then,” explores the history and social significance of postcards. The exhibit also includes an oversized photo of a card featuring downtown Belle Fourche, circa 1912. The exhibit will be in place through January.

Through Dec. 16: Disarticulation exhibit by northern Idaho artist Megan Atwood Cherry, Ruddell Gallery, Black Hills State University campus, Spearfish.

Firehouse auditions, Nov. 27-28

Auditions for the next two Firehouse Brewing theatrical productions: "Dead Man's Cell Phone," and "The Good Doctor" will be held at 6: 30 p.m. Nov. 27 and 28 at the Firehouse Brewing Theatre. Auditions will consist of cold readings from both plays. Prepared monologues are welcome.

Registration opens for art show

SPEARFISH | Applications are now available for the The Matthews Opera House's 39th Winter Art Show.

Applications are available in the art gallery or online. Patrons can be professional or amateur, ages pre-kindergarten and up. There is no geographical requirement to enter the show.

The dates for artists to register their work, with the completed application, is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Jan. 10-13. Fees vary depending on age group.

The 39th Winter Art Show takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Jan. 17-25 in the art gallery.

Write your life story

Stumped for a holiday gift? How about the story of your life. Molly Barari will lead a "Thus Far" writing workshop from 10 a.m. to noon on Dec. 2 and 9 at On Common Ground, Rapid City. The program is open to adults of all ages. Cost is $30 and people should plan to attend both workshops. Writing materials are required, and light refreshments will be served.

Sioux Falls hosts railroad show

South Dakota State Railroad Museum of Hill City will take part in Trains at Christmas Model Railroad Show and Swap Meet Nov. 18-19 at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds, Sioux Falls.

Show time is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19. Admission is $5 per person, and free for kids 12 and under.

Kid Rock coming back to Sturgis

In other concert announcements: Kid Rock will return to the Sturgis Buffalo Chip for the 2018 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

He is set to perform Thursday, Aug. 9.
