The Bukit Lizt Players, a senior acting troupe, will perform a series of one-act plays from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at The Matthews Opera House Theatre, 612 Main St., in Spearfish. 

Jan. 12

"Dead Man's Cellphone": A dark comedy presented by Firehouse Brewing Theatre about how we memorialize the dead, and how that remembering changes us. It is the odyssey of a woman forced to confront her own assumptions about morality, redemption and the need to connect in a technologically obsessed world. Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights Jan. 12-13, 19-20, 26-27 and Feb. 2-3. Tickets are $15 in advance or at the door.

"Rabbit Hole": Becca and Howie Corbett have everything a family could want, until a life-shattering accident turns their world upside down and leaves the couple drifting perilously apart. Winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Rabbit Hole charts their bittersweet search for comfort in the darkest of places and for a path that will lead them back into the light of day. Season ticket reservations start Dec. 29. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 26-27 and Feb. 2, 3, 9 and 10 and at 2 p.m. Jan. 28 and Feb. 4 and 11 at the Black Hills Community Theatre.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Sturgis Easter cantata to start rehearsing

Easter is early this year, April 1, so the Sturgis Arts Council's annual Easter Cantata is planned for Palm Sunday, March 25, and Tuesday, March 27, at Grace Lutheran Church. 

Marlene Kotab will coordinate and conduct the cantata. Because of space constraints, the choir is limited to approximately 75 singers. If interested in singing with this group, contact Kotab by phone at 347-1375 or at kotabgmc@rushmore.com.

Rehearsals will begin Sunday, Feb. 11, and run every Sunday from 1:30 to 3 p.m., with one Thursday practice on March 22 at Grace Lutheran Church, 1061 Sherman St. in Sturgis. Singers should plan to attend all/most of the rehearsals. 

Registration opens for art show

SPEARFISH | Applications are now available for the The Matthews Opera House's 39th Winter Art Show.

Applications are available in the art gallery or online. Patrons can be professional or amateur, ages pre-kindergarten and up.

Registration is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Jan. 10-13. Fees vary depending on age group.

The show takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Jan. 17-25 in the art gallery.

Sweeny Todd auditions

Auditions for "Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" will be Sunday, Jan. 14 and Monday, Jan. 15 at the Firehouse Brewing Theater at 6:30 p.m.  

The play will be directed by Jeffrey Alan Smith with music by Vonnie Houchin.

Callbacks are scheduled for Tuesday, January 16 at 6:30 p.m.

Those auditioning should be prepared for singing and cold-reading selections from Sweeney Todd. Casting announcement will be made by Friday, Jan. 19.

Performances are Fridays and Saturdays March 30 through May 5.
