I've been watching with interest as the old church on Haines Avenue was jacked up and hauled away. Now there's a new building under construction at that site.
Cuatro Vistas Commercial Center, an 18,800-square-foot shopping center, is being built at 1520 Haines Ave., confirmed Mario Rangel, a partner in Munoz/Rangel Property, the development company.
His partner is Angel Munoz, of Munoz Logging & Construction in Rapid City.
In concept, Cuatro Vistas is a strip center, but the design is nothing like a strip. The retail shops will face four different directions. That's why its name is Cuatro Vistas, which in Spanish means four views or four directions.
Rangel said the building is designed for as many as 10 different tenants, but the interior could be configured differently if a tenant wants a larger space.
In addition, the design includes space for a drive-up window and enough parking spaces to accommodate a restaurant.
He said the project has no signed tenants yet. He and Sandra Runde of Prudential Kahler Realtors in Rapid City are marketing the property.
Munoz' crews recently started the dirt work, and Rangel said they hope to have it enclosed by Christmas.
The church, by the way, was moved to Buffalo Chip Campground, Rangel said.

Rushmore Energy Systems outgrows its space
Rushmore Energy Systems got its start in 1979 as a dealer in solar-energy systems. As the popularity of solar dimmed, owner Keith O'Neill and his father-partner Patrick O'Neill switched to products like woodstoves, pellet stoves and gas fireplaces.
It was a good move, apparently. Twenty-eight years later, Rushmore Energy Systems - now owned by Keith and his wife, Julie - has outgrown its location on Canyon Lake Drive.
Rushmore Energy Systems has moved to 753 B Deadwood Avenue, formerly the Anderson Millwork showroom. Keith said all of the Anderson's wood trimwork is still there, and it works well for displaying stoves and fireplaces.
And it's bigger.
"We kind of got to the point (in the old space) where all we could do was cram more stuff into it," he said. Now, there's room for separate display areas for woodstoves, gas fireplaces and other products.
And this type of heating has gained in popularity, he said. Some stoves now can burn fuels such as corn and sunflowers.
