South Dakota remains firmly in the top 10 of the 50 states where motorists have the best chance to strike a deer.

According to 2016 statistics from Insurance carrier State Farm, deer strikes cause an average of $4,000 in damage with fatalities and injuries to drivers and passengers part of the high personal cost. The Fall mating season offers the most risk when deer are moving most, especially in the early morning hours and just after sunset, but deer strikes can happen anytime of year.
