The Bear Butte Chapter of Bereaved Parents USA, a support group for people who have lost a child, meets from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. the last Tuesday of each month at 809 South St., Suite 105, Rapid City. The group welcomes bereaved parents, grandparents and siblings.
Organizer Delain Johnson first began the group in 2006, three years after her son, Army Captain Christopher Soelzer, was killed in Iraq when the vehicle he was in was struck by an improvised explosive device.
Johnson said the group lasted just a few months.
“It was still pretty early and I just couldn’t become as active as I wanted to be,” she said.
Johnson tried it again in August 2011, and the group now has about 15 members who meet once a month. Johnson also is organizing a bereavement camp, scheduled for May 17-19, 2013, at Outlaw Ranch near Custer.
“Prayerfully, it will be open to families who have suffered a loss free of charge,” she said. “I’m hoping.”
