As layers of snow began to melt, layers of clothing began to shed.
Spring is here, and the fashion this season is headed in a very sweet direction with a mix of styles, according to some local fashionistas who offer their own take on the season.
Feminine floral and sensual satin are all the rage with the ladies this year. From floral print dresses to ruffled, silky lingerie tops, women’s fashion is looking girly. For those who wish to try out a rougher look, baggy shorts and masculine boots are prevalent, as well.
“I think we’ll be seeing a return of wedge sandals, especially those with lots of bright colors and prints,” said Brooke McLellan, 24, Spearfish.
McLellan considers herself knowledgeable on the art of fashion, which is apparent when hearing her predictions for spring.
“As far as spring fashions, I expect we’ll see lots of glammed-up grunge — baggy shorts with high heels, piled bangles and soft, feminine tops with ruffles, lace and silk,” she said.
Women certainly will have several options this season, but what does every stylish woman need? A fashionable man.
For men’s styles this season, bright color will be a strong emphasis — think orange, red, yellow or green.
“This spring in men’s trends you’ll see a lot of ’70s to ’80s throwback styles. Men’s shorts are a bit higher, lots of simple, strong graphic tees,” said Jason Rowe, 20, of Rapid City.
Rowe is a student at the Art Institute of Colorado in Denver, where he studies photography with an emphasis on fashion editorials.
“Another big part of trendy fashion seems to focus on the juxtaposition of casual and formal. Many men are wearing hoodies under blazers, and mixing in fedoras and formal shoes with their casual slim-fit jeans and American Apparel sweatshirts,” added Rowe.
So where to begin the shopping adventures? There are plenty of places in Rapid City to browse the racks, including thrift and vintage stores. Spring styles will be available at most local retailers, or try an online site such as www.forever21. com or www.americanapparel.net.
“Shopping can be fun wherever you decide to go. A great fashionista can find a fabulous outfit anywhere — the important part is putting it together, accessorizing and then rocking it with confidence in your own personal style,” said McLellan.
Rowe agrees that secondhand stores are great for finding an extra something for personal style, but also suggests looking for everyday articles at stores such as Runnings Farm & Fleet and Cabela’s.
Whatever style one prefers, it is important to remember that it is an expression of one’s individuality and can be tailored to suit any attitude or persona. No matter what season it is, self-expression will always be in style.
