The Creators ‘Game Of Thrones’ Are Making The New Star Wars Movies

Fan fatigue does not seem to be an issue when it comes to the Star Wars franchise.

There’s the episodic Skywalker saga that’s been ongoing since 1977, as well as the new trilogy being developed by “The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson and the biennial spinoff movies like “Rogue One” and the upcoming “Solo.” Ever since the first movie was a smash more than 40 years ago, people just can’t seem to get enough of the space adventure.

Now, a different creative force is taking a stab at the Star Wars universe. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, creators of the massively popular HBO series “Game of Thrones” are set to write and produce a new series of Star Wars movies.

In addition to being the most popular show HBO has ever produced, “Game of Thrones” is also one of the most acclaimed shows in television history, setting a record in 2015 for the most Emmy Awards ever won by a single show in a single year. Obviously, Benioff and Weiss deserve a lot of credit.

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, in a story at “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push ‘Star Wars’ in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

No further details, such as which aspects or characters of the Star Wars universe the new film series will focus on, or expected premiere dates, are yet available. “Game of Thrones” will end its run on HBO in 2019, so Benioff and Weiss will apparently waste no time sinking their teeth into a new project. The pair was also developing a new show for HBO, “Confederate,” which was slated to present an alternate history of the American Civil War, but in the wake of this news, that project has been declared “unlikely” to continue.

“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’ is complete.”

Hopefully they can add something unique and interesting to the Star Wars canon. Would you like to see a little more “Game of Thrones” injected into the world’s favorite sci-fi adventure?
