The death of a 37-year-old Casper, Wyo., man at a campground east of Sturgis was due to an apparent heart attack, Meade County Sheriff Ron Merwin said Thursday.
The body of Brian Rush was found in his tent at the Iron Horse campground off Highway 79 near the Highway 34 intersection.
Merwin said the death was not considered suspicious.
He and other law enforcement officials at the daily rally media conference said the motorcycle crowd continues to celebrate with relatively few legal infractions or injuries. As of 3 p.m. Thursday, 50 people were jailed at Sturgis, compared to 43 for the day a year ago.
Two Iowa men, Jerry Smith, 44, and James Bixler, 44, both of Oskaloosa, are facing drug charges after a traffic stop on Interstate 90 in Pennington County. A South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper pulled the two motorcyclists over about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. During the traffic stop, the trooper discovered methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana.
Meanwhile, the 69th annual motorcycle gathering remains free of traffic fatalities since starting Monday. Among significant injury accidents reported by the state Highway Patrol Wednesday:
- John Miller, 53, Vernal, Utah, Annie Dewaltz, Pueblo, Colo., and her passenger, Ellie Naill, were taken to the hospital following a crash on U.S. Highway 385 south of Deadwood. Miller rear-ended a vehicle stopped in heavy traffic. The impact sent him careening into oncoming traffic, striking Dewaltz's motorcycle. Miller was not wearing a helmet and suffered serious injuries. Conditions of the others were not immediately available.
- Colleen Stevens, 42, and Keith Kastonek, 41, both of Hinkley, Minn., suffered serious injuries after he struck her bike from behind during a turn on U.S. Highway 85 in Harding County, 20 miles south of Buffalo. Neither was wearing a helmet.
