The American Advertising Federation-Black Hills awarded its 2013 ADDY Awards on Feb. 22 at the Dahl Arts Center.

This year marked the most entries received for the annual awards, which are given for print, broadcast, out-of-home and public service advertising in all media. A total of 98 entries were judged on creativity, originality and innovative strategy, with 10 receiving gold ADDYs and 23 silver ADDYs.

Jason Alley captured the Tommy Award, or Best of Show, in the consumer/trade publication campaign category for his work with Black Hills Ammunition.

Alley also received a Judges Choice Award for the Lakota Voice Project in the integrated campaign category. A second Judges Choice Award went to Black Hills Corp. for its Life Sponsored by Energy Annual Report narrative in the collateral material category.

In the student category there were 43 entries, with two receiving gold ADDYs and six earning silver ADDYs. Kelsey Mackin of Black Hill State University was awarded Best of Show for Value your life — Anti-Smoking in the nontraditional advertising student category. Runner-up for Best of Show was Danielle Doney of BHSU for U.S. Currency, a visual illustration.

Ross Johnson received the 2013 Silver Medal Award from the advertising federation. It honors a member who has made outstanding contributions to advertising and been active in furthering the industry’s standards, according to a news release from the group.

The Black Hills ADDY Awards are the first of a three-tier national competition. Gold winners automatically advance to one of eight district competitions; silver award winners can choose to enter their work at the next level. District winners go on to compete in the national ADDY Awards contest.
