WHITECLAY, Neb. | Activists who want to end beer sales in the Nebraska town of Whiteclay planned a protest Friday after what they described as a showdown with law officers Thursday.

Whiteclay is on the South Dakota border. Critics blame alcohol stores there for problems across the border on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where alcohol is banned.

The group Alcohol Justice says an observance Thursday of the anniversary of the 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee by American Indian Movement activists turned into a showdown with Nebraska state troopers. The activists say the troopers withdrew when more than 100 people marched into Whiteclay

Oglala Sioux President Bryan Brewer said hundreds of people planned to return to Whiteclay Friday.

The Nebraska State Patrol and the Sheridan County Sheriff's Office didn't immediately return telephone calls.

Baloney. There are choices involved here. People are are choosing to spend their money in this manner. This story is indicative of a larger societal problem -- whining instead of taking responsibility.

This is really getting tiresome...the same old protest, and the same old media coverage each and every time. If the protesters were really sincere about helping Native Americans, they would spend their time focusing on the alcoholism problem on the reservation and helping people to overcome it rather than doing the easy thing and staging a photo-op that they know the media will fall for again and again and again. Shutting down beer stores in Whiteclay is not going to solve the problem. It's like shutting down McDonald's because too many Big Macs might cause a heat attack. There are choices involved here. Nobody is putting a gun to anybody's head to buy a beer or a Big Mac. Get to the source of the problem and fix it.

Whiteclay is to Pine Ridge, what pawn shops, casinos and payday loan centers are to North East side of Rapid City. Greedy business owners preying on the poor and misfortunate. These types of business operations are what destroy the integrity of a community, all so that a few people become rich while the rest of the population fall into hopeless poverty.

As an alcoholic, a geographic location is not the problem...There are a lot of bootleggers running arround the rez making big money, anytime one of our friends hit RC or other cities off the rez booze is bought....White Clay is the closest community selling, this get shut down than they march on Rapid?Again blaming white clay is blaming the pencil for the wrong answer...

It is a wonderful thing that Native American activists are rallying against an enemy of Native people, but maybe the enemy is not the beer stores in White Clay. Do you believe that if you succeed in closing those stores that the alcoholism problem on the reservation will be defeated? How long will it be before people start making beer runs to the next closest beer store, and the forbidden fruit will be even more enticing. You should remember what Pogo said.

They were shooting guns when they marched to Wounded Knee.

Even if they are sober when they march on Whiteclay, Neb I think I will stay home.

Lets hope its a peaceful march.
