STURGIS -- Bikers won't need their wheels for trips back and forth during the annual Sturgis rally.
Prairie Hills Transit will offer safe-ride shuttle services between the two communities during evening events and venues throughout the weeklong event, beginning on Monday, Aug. 9, and concluding Friday, Aug. 13.
The shuttles will run hourly, with the first pick-up at 6:30 p.m. at Buffalo Chip Campground, and the last shuttle leaving Deadwood Gulch Convention Center at 1:30 a.m.
On the weekends (Aug. 7, 8, and 14), buses will begin at the Buffalo Chip at 7:30 p.m. and run every two hours, with the last pick-up at Deadwood Gulch at 1:30 a.m.
Pick-up times are dependent on traffic.
The cost is $15 for a daily wristband, which will be available from the driver. Exact amount is required for the fare box; drivers do not carry change.
Pick-up/drop-off sites are as follows (with the loop beginning and ending at the Buffalo Chip):
• Buffalo Chip
• Glencoe
• Then Sturgis Main Street, east end (Main and Middle streets),
• and west at 4th and Sherman Streets before going on to Deadwood with stops at
• the lower parking lot (trolley depot)
• and Deadwood Gulch Convention Center.
Stops will be in reverse order for the Deadwood-to-Sturgis trips.
Riders can get on and off at any of the stops, with wristbands allowing unlimited rides during the shift for which it was bought (ending at 2:30 a.m.).
Advance reservations are not needed. Just watch for the buses featuring Coyote Ugly Saloon/Deadwood Gulch signs.
Prairie Hills Transit is a nonprofit program and a United Way agency. The shuttle rides are being provided as a safe, convenient alternative for residents planning to celebrate in Sturgis and Deadwood.
No food or beverages are allowed on Prairie Hills Transit buses.
Because of the high volume of traffic in and around Sturgis during the Rally, Prairie Hills Transit's daytime curb-to-curb service hours will be limited Aug. 9-13.
Service will be provided from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Riders must call at least a day in advance to schedule a pick-up at 347-0086.
The regularly scheduled commuter route along the Interstate 90 corridor will run as usual (Monday through Friday) between Spearfish, Sturgis and Rapid City. Buses run both directions with four in the morning and four in the afternoon. Call 642-6668 for details. Cost is $6 one-way for the full trip; $3 one-way between Spearfish and Sturgis; and $3.75 one-way between Sturgis and Rapid City.
