An Oglala woman has admitted exposing her daughter to an unsafe environment for almost two years.
Shannon J'Egga Brave, 39, was initially charged with allowing Gerald George American Horse to sexually abuse a minor child and with providing marijuana to someone younger than 21.
Brave pleaded guilty to child abuse. She faces a potential maximum sentence of 10 years in prison when she is sentenced in May. She remains free on bond.
In other federal court action:
Antonio Diaz Left Hand Bull, 20, of Rosebud was sentenced to time served (nine months and 29 days) and ordered to pay $100 in restitution after a federal jury convicted him of simple assault. The charge stems from an incident in Todd County in March 2009 when Left Hand Bull attempted to forcibly have sex with another person.
Eleazar Gerardo Guevara, also known as Stevan Guevara, 25, of St. Paul, Minn., was sentenced to 70 months in prison and five years of supervised release after pleading guilty to possessing and distributing methamphetamine in Todd and Pennington counties between July and September 2009. Guevara was immediately turned over to the U.S. Marshal.
Charity Faith Blue Thunder, 52, of Mission was sentenced to 30 months in prison and three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter. Blue Thunder admitted to being the driver of a motor vehicle that crashed in Todd County on July 22, 2009. A passenger in the vehicle died. Blue Thunder was ordered to report to the United States Bureau of Prisons on March 25.
Anna Mae Rowland, 22, of Wounded Knee was sentenced to 39 months in prison and three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon for an incident that occurred in Todd County in August 2008. Rowland admitted kicking her victim. Rowland was immediately remanded to the U.S. Marshal's custody.
A federal jury has found Jeffrey Bentone, 24, of Eagle Butte guilty of sexual abuse. Bentone was accused of sexually abusing two victims, one in March 2005 and the other in May 2008. Bentone could be sentenced to life in prison. He was turned over to the U.S. Marshal to await sentencing.
Anthony E. Farmer, 26, of Rosebud had pleaded guilty to one count of abusive sexual contact with a child for an April 2009 incident in Mission involving a child younger than 12. Farmer faces a possible maximum sentence of life in prison when he is sentenced in June. He remains in the U.S. Marshal's custody.
Conroy W. Chasing In Timber, 27, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months in custody for assault by striking and beating or wounding. The charge stemmed from a March 2009 assault of a Meade County woman. Chasing In Timber was immediately turned over the U.S. Marshal.
Stephan-Paul Ziegler, 22, of Lower Brule has pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon for attacking a Lower Brule man in September 2008. Ziegler could be sentenced to a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison when he is sentenced in June. He remains in custody.
Editor's note: The United States Attorney generally prosecutes felonies committed on reservations, while tribal courts handle misdemeanor crimes. Felonies that happen off the reservation are prosecuted in state/circuit court and are reported separately in the Journal. Some drug and firearms cases are also prosecuted in federal court.
All charges carry the possibility of fines up to $250,000 upon conviction unless otherwise noted.
