buy this photo Jason Gross Meade County Times Tribune Sly Hill and its road north of Sturgis have been abuzz with activity for the last couple of weeks. Crews spent Friday inserting soil nails into the hill to help keep a soldier beam and lagging wall in place. Vertical steel H-piles for the wall are visible on the photo's right side.

STURGIS – Repair work on Sly Hill Road, on the north edge of town, began Nov. 9, about two weeks ahead of schedule. Preliminary plans called for the work to start between Nov. 23 and Dec. 18. Because work is ahead of schedule, the road could reopen by Dec. 19.

Heavy snow last winter and more moisture in the spring made the soil on the south edge of the road unstable, causing a landslide. Because the road was unsafe for travel, the city closed it.

The affected area of roadway was about 100 feet long. Since the road’s closure, residents who live north of town have been forced to use a detour that adds nearly 10 miles to a trip into Sturgis.
