Rapid City is not exactly the land of McMansions, but people looking to build a home have some specific features they're looking for.
Here's a list offered by Chad Lewis, past president of the Black Hills Home Builders Association:
A three-car garage.
Open floor plans with vaulted ceilings or 9-foot ceilings.
A third bedroom on the main floor. "Children don't seem to share a bedroom anymore," Lewis said.
Main floor bathroom.
Whirlpool tubs.
Interior colors that are neutral, but not white.
Wood floors.
Master bathrooms.
Walk-in closets.
Lewis is seeing a local trend in energy-efficient homes. Location and schools are still top considerations for homeowners.
Even though the housing market nationwide seems to be slowing, Lewis said he has noticed that business here has picked up since Thanksgiving.
"This market's been really good," he said.
