The following 10 books may never reach the New York Times' best-sellers list, but these local writers have created stories that may broaden your horizons or carry you away to another time and place.
y Bruce Roseland, an award-winning poet and South Dakota rancher, has finished his latest book of poetry, "A Prairie Prayer." Illustrated by Rapid City artist Marie Louise Tesch, the fourth-generation rancher uses poetry to describe modern ranch life with an appreciation for the past and a wry wit honed by his prairie life.
Roseland will give readings and Tesch will display her work and perform at an artists' reception from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at the Spearfish Art Center Gallery, 612 Main St., in Spearfish. The book also is available at Borders Books in Rapid City.
y Tired of the same old tourist traps? You're just the traveler that Robin McMacken, formerly of the Rapid City Journal, has written her latest travel guide for. "The Dakotas Off the Beaten Path, 7th edition," features local dining and quirky cultural tidbits, along attractions such as Devil's Gulch
(the chasm that the infamous Jesse James leapt across on
horseback) and Badlands National Park. The book is available at Borders Books.
y While growing up, Deanne Stillman spent countless hours around stables as her mother worked with trainers exercising horses at a racetrack. Stillman has written a new book, "Mustang: The Saga of the Wild Horse in the American West." Recently published by Houghton Mifflin, it tells the story of the wild horse with some of the material dealing with South Dakota - Native Americans and horses, the frontier wars, Crazy Horse and the memorial, Sitting Bull and a wild horse sanctuary in Lantry on land leased from the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. Ten years in the making, it is available at Borders Books.
y Troy Wayne O'Neill spent his adult life traveling to all corners of the planet. Born and raised in Rapid City, he died in an automobile accident. His novel, "Wish," was published after his death.

y L.M. Romagnoli recently self-published a contemporary book, "The Worn-Out Backpack." The first in a series of children's books, it is the story of a young girl dealing with the emotional turmoil of her father's military deployments to the Middle East. y A Rapid City teenager has launched her writing career by releasing the first book of a series called "Nameless" by Jacqueline Mychaels. Published by iUniverse, the fantasy novel features the perils and adventures of Aeron and his companion, Kyle. Mychaels said it took six years to write and that she currently is writing its sequel. y Edith-Maria Redlin of the Black Hills has translated a collection of Western tales in "Wahres aus dem Wilden Westen" ("True Tales of the Wild West").
