A man pleaded not guilty Monday to raping another man while housed at the Pennington County Jail’s work release facility.
Steven Flood, 24, was arraigned in front of 7th Circuit Court Judge Janine Kern on a grand jury indictment for second-degree rape. The rape is alleged to have occurred between Dec. 8, 2009, and Jan. 8, 2010, while Flood was on federal work release.
Flood faces a maximum sentence of 50 years in prison and a $50,000 fine.
The Pennington County state’s attorney’s office has also accused Flood of being a habitual offender with a conviction in federal court for abusive sexual contact. Flood denied the accusation. If Flood is convicted and the state proves he has the previous felony conviction, he could face a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Flood remains in custody on a $100,000 bond. His attorney indicated she will request a bond reduction at his next court appearance on March 1.
