So far this week, 45 percent of the licenses have been filled in the third week of South Dakota’s 2010 mountain lion hunting season. More than half of the limit on female mountain lions has been reached.

As of Monday, 18 mountain lions had been killed, 13 of them females, according to the informational hotline of the state Department of Game, Fish & Parks. The season will end March 31, or sooner if 25 female mountain lions or 40 total lions are killed.

Hunters are responsible for checking the harvest total before hunting by calling 866-895-9067. Hunters must report their kills within 24 hours at 394-2391, or call state radio at night and on weekends at 393-8121. The carcasses must be taken to the Rapid City office of the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish & Parks, at 3305 W. South St.

The reason it slows is lions that may have been scouted the month before are already killed. Also, with a successful hunt, that hunter is no longer hunting. There is plenty of lions out there. Also, many areas are closed to all but walk in hunting. Thus, walking up a 500-1,000 foot hill, 2 miles from the nearest road is a deterrant as you would have to drag the cat back out. Some areas(north side of huge hills) the snow is still over a foot deep, which makes walking treacherous with fallen branches beneath the snow. The other reason is that some people are only going for larger male lions. There are several areas where many female cats live in close proximity. i.e. 2 taken from 1 mile west of Stratobowl. The State still underestimates the population for planning purposes.

I find it odd that everybody claims that the hills are loaded with mountain lions, yet only one is being killed per day. The kill has really slowed down with the warmer temperatures this and last week.

Those who kill for sport alone have less value than the creatures they kill.
