Local photographers captured the stark beauty of nature, the majesty of wildlife and the sports of mountain culture in the fourth annual Dahl Mountain Photo Competition.

The juried exhibit drew more than 250 entries, with about 60 chosen for an exhibit that is on display at The Journey Museum through May 25. The contest is a partnership between the Rapid City Arts Council and the Rapid City Journal.

Visitors to the exhibit will be able to vote for the annual Peg Sagen Memorial People's Choice Award. The late Sagen, former editor of the Rapid City Journal, was instrumental in creating the partnership and launching the photo contest. The award - an original art platter created by Black Hills Glass Blowers - will be given May 13.

Judges awarded prizes in three categories - youth, adult and professional. Winners of the contest were announced and honored at a reception Friday night that launched the monthlong Dahl Mountain Culture Festival.
