Dr. John 'Jack' Elston
RAPID CITY - Dr. John T. "Jack" Elston died at the age of 89. Dr. Elston, beloved husband, father, and grandfather died quietly in his home surrounded by his wife and children on All Saints Day, Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, after a long and difficult battle with cancer.
He was born Nov. 22, 1919 to Philip and Faye Elston of Boone, Iowa. They moved to Glidden, Iowa where he graduated from high school in 1938. There he met his high school sweetheart, Marion Constance McPherson, whom he married June 2, 1942.
Dr. Elston graduated from the State University of Iowa in 1943, enlisted in the U.S. Army and entered medical school. He graduated from the University of Iowa School of Medicine in 1945 and was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha national medical honor society. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1955 with a rank of Major. He was certified by the American Board of Pathology in 1954 after training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology in Washington, D.C. During his training, Dr. Elston researched fluid resuscitation of critically ill infants and children; perfecting techniques remaining in active use throughout the world today.
An active and well respected member of the South Dakota medical community, Dr. Elston served on the Board of Directors of the South Dakota Blue Shield, was a director of the School of Medical Technologists, an inspector of laboratories for Accreditation by the American Board of Clinical Pathology. He served as past president of the Black Hills District Medical Society, the South Dakota State Medical Association, and as Chief of the Medical Staff for Rapid City Regional Hospital. In 1986 he was elected an Emeritus Fellow of the College of American Pathologists.
Elston was honored for his services during the Rapid City Flood of 1972 for his role in maintaining health care services as the Pennington County health officer. The citation from the A.H. Robbins Pharmaceutical Co. noted these services were provided despite the stress of loss of both his father-in-law and mother-in-law in the flood. In 1980 he received the C.B. Alford Award for outstanding service to public health. In 2000, he received a lifetime services award from Rapid City Regional Hospital and the Medical Staff and was recognized at that time by the SD Medical Association for 50 years of continuous practice in South Dakota. He was an active member of Rotary International and the Elks Club in Rapid City.
He is survived by his wife, Marion, Rapid City; son, John, Brighton, Colo.; daughter, Mary (Tam) Colson, Rapid City; and sons, Patrick, Houston, Texas, Michael, Rapid City, and Peter, Rapid City; grandchildren, Tara Schaack, Rapid City, Bill Colson, Sioux Falls, Heidi Waterfall, Brooktondale, N.Y., Mike Elston, Minneapolis, Minn., Lindsay Johnson, Burns, Wyo., Katie Vifquain, Rapid City, Nicholas Elston, Twenty-nine Palms, Calif., and Ashley Elston, Rapid City; and great-grandchildren, Libby and Cecily Schaack, Rapid City, and Henry Waterfall, Brooktondale, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by parents, Philip and Faye; brothers, Philip and Robert; and grandson, Jeremiah.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, 2700 Jackson Blvd., followed by a Christian Wake service.
Mass of Christian Burial will commence at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, with the Rev. Michel Mulloy presiding. Burial, with military honors by the TREA Chapter 29 Honor Guard, will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Donald Eugene Miller
BOX ELDER - Donald Eugene Miller, 87, passed away peacefully Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at Rapid City Regional Hospital following a stroke. He was surrounded by his daughters and family members.
Donald was born March 18, 1922 in Chamberlain to Dewey and Enid (Gooder) Miller. He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1939. After a year at Dakota Wesleyan University, he went to work for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. He met his lifelong love, Glyde Crisman, at a dance and married her on March 11, 1943; the day before he shipped out to serve in WWII. Donald joined the U.S. Army in September 1942 and proudly served his country with the 714th Railway Operating Battalion in Alaska.
Donald and Glyde had five daughters: Judith Ann Ludy, Barba Gail Williams (Charles) of St. Paul, Minn., Donna Jean Rubin (Joe) of Benicia, Calif., Rebecca Rae Hale (Sandy) of Box Elder, and Patricia Kay Miller-Martin (Gary) of Pleasant Hill, Calif. Don and Glyde had eight grandchildren: Kimberly Wirka (Jason), Courtney Williams, Sabina de Marchi (Paul), Adrienne Kassis, Brett Hale, Rae Marie Hale, Jeff Rubin and Josh Rubin. They were further blessed with four great-grandchildren: Susanna deMarchi, Julianne deMarchi, Claire Wirka, and Charles Wirka.
He is survived by half brothers, Raymond Miller of Portland, Ore., Richard Miller of Sonoma, Calif., Jack Miller of San Francisco, Calif.; half sister, Jane Swindle of Mountain Home, Ark.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.
Donald was preceded in death by his wife Glyde; his daughter, Judith; his sister, Betty Wagenmann; and his brother, Gordon Miller.
Donald worked for the railroad for 40 years and retired in 1982. He and his wife were wonderful dancers, and enjoyed golf, playing cards, hunting, traveling, and meeting people. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 0018 at Mitchell; the Elks Lodge 1187 at Rapid City; and the Masonic Resurgam Lodge 0031 of Mitchell, celebrating 60 years of membership on April 6, 2009. Donald won several state and city golf tournaments and shot a hole-in-one on 10 different occasions. He was a special friend and frequent visitor to all of the Fire Fighting Stations in Rapid City.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, with the Rev. Herb Cleveland officiating.
There will also be a Masonic Service led by Ken Harris of Rapid City Lodge 25 and Military Honors by the VFW Honor Guard.
There will be a luncheon and reception following the services from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 333 Jolly Lane.
