Norman O. Barstad

FORT MEADE - Norman O. Barstad, 94, Fort Meade, died Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at the Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Hospital.

He served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his half brother, Obert Barstad and his half sister, Alta Barstad Schaar, Scranton, N.D.

Committal services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with Chaplain Ralph Vencill officiating and military honors by the Belle Fourche Veterans Honor Guard.

Dorothy D. Craft

VAN WERT, Ohio - Dorothy D. Craft, 84, Van Wert, died Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at VanCrest Health Care Center.

Survivors include six sons, Robert Craft Jr., Cheyenne, Wyo., Barry Craft, Greensboro, N.C., John Craft, Marysville, Roger Craft, Covington, David Craft, Loveland, and Brian Craft, Bowling Green; two daughters, Jeanne Bollenbacher, Celina, and Bonnie Kretz, Perryburg; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert.

Services will be at 11 a.m. EST Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the Cowan & Son Funeral Home, with the Rev. Paul Miller officiating.

Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 16, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, S.D.

James Donald Egan

STURGIS - James Donald Egan, 75, Sturgis, died Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, at the Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Hospital.

James was born Irish, Catholic and Democrat on Sept. 11, 1934, at Spokane, Wash., to James Clifford and Martha Elizabeth (Cunningham). He grew up in Spokane and spent his teen years with his aunt and uncle in Montana. He joined the Air Force at an early age and served his country honorably. Upon receiving his discharge he went to work for the Lockheed Corporation. He was a superintendent when he quit in 1973. He lived in Lucerne Valley, Calif., where he owned and operated a bar until 1979. He moved to South Dakota to enjoy retirement. He liked to play poker and other card games. He also liked to visit Deadwood.

James married Donna Lee Dachtler at Fort Meade on Aug. 14, 2008. They renewed their wedding vows on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2009.

James was a lifetime member of the DAV and VFW. He was a former member of the American Legion. He was a volunteer at the John Tracy School for the Deaf in California.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Egan, Sturgis; one son, Victor Egan, Clovis, Calif.; three daughters, Katherine (Butch) Craig, Rapid City, Christine (Pete) Adhdsizad, Las Vegas, Nev., and Mary (Bill) Schwinden, Visalia, Calif.; his sister, Pat Doolittle, Fresno, Calif.; stepchildren, Scot (Marlene) Dannenbring and Sue (Leroy) Schlomer, Rapid City.

James said he was "Never much of a father, but a 'Great' grandfather." Survivors also include 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel. Rosary services will begin at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at the funeral chapel, with Fr. Paul Dahms officiating. Burial, with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard, will follow at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Memorials have been established to the Disabled American Veterans or the Meade County Senior Center.

Stanley R. Howard

EAGLE BUTTE - Stanley R. Howard, 57, Eagle Butte and formerly of Fort Totten, N.D., died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, in Bismarck, N.D.

Yerke 'Y.Z.' Larson

SIOUX FALLS - Yerke Zane "Y.Z." Larson, 87, died Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at Prince of Peace Nursing Home in Sioux Falls.

Yerke Zane "Y.Z." Larson was born Nov. 6, 1922, in Brookings County, the son of Robert E. and Julia (Hillestad) Larson. He was raised on a farm near Humboldt. Y.Z. graduated from Hartford High School in 1940. While attending college for business, Y.Z. decided to join the U.S. Army to serve his country during WWII. He attended jump school and became a member of the elite 101st Airborne Division. While preparing for the Normandy Invasion, Y.Z. was stationed in Orange County, Calif. He married Pearl Ogden, a South Dakota native and they resided together in California before Y.Z. was shipped out. He served in many campaigns in Europe with the 101st and fought in many decisive battles. Y.Z. was one of the group that first took the "Eagle's Nest," Hitler's personal home in the Alps. After the war ended, Y.Z. returned home and he and his family settled in Sioux Falls. He started working at Maxwell's Hotel Supplies. He and Pearl purchased the business in 1964. Pearl died in 1966. Y.Z. owned and operated Maxwell's for the next 45 years. He stopped working full time in 2002 due to a broken hip.

Y.Z. was a master card player and spent many days playing with his friends at the Minnehaha Country Club. He also enjoyed taking his kids to the YMCA to play racquet ball. Y.Z. was very active in the veterans community, a faithful member of the VFW, DAV and American Legion. He was also an active member of the 101st Airborne Division Association and attended many events around the country. Y.Z. loved keeping in touch with family members and scheduling reunions.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Joan of Sioux Falls; two sons, Robert "Al" (Kathy) of Sioux Falls, and Gary (Linda) of Pierre; two daughters, Carol Wills of Sioux Falls and Sandra Runde (Marshall Schleve) of Rapid City.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl; grandson, Grant Lucas; brother, Vincent "Cub" Larson; and two sisters, Beverly Brandt, Florence Larson.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. CST today at Miller Funeral Home (13th and Main) in Sioux Falls. Inurnment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls.

James 'Jim' Lockhart Jr.

NEWNAN, Ga. - James "Jim' Lockhart Jr., 58, Newnan, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009.

Arrangements are pending.

Emma Michalek

MURDO - Emma Michalek, 75, Murdo, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at home.

Survivors include two daughters, Lana Fedderson and Wanda Larson, both of Murdo; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Murdo United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Murdo City Cemetery.

Kenneth J. Richards Sr.

RAPID CITY - Kenneth J. Richards Sr., 74, Rapid City, died Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at a local nursing home.

Survivors include his wife, Vera Richards, Rapid City; a son, Kenneth Richards Jr.; a daughter, Michelle Richards; and two sisters, Myrna Zephier, Minneapolis, and Mary Ann Trimble, Rapid City.

Wake services will begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the Mother Butler Center.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church, with the Rev. David Matzjko, S.J. presiding.

Burial with military honors will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Services at Serenity Springs is in charge of arrangements.

SPEARFISH - Robert E. Rowley, 94, Spearfish, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Survivors include his daughter, Nancy Robinson of Belle Fourche.

OGLALA - Pearl M. Stewart, 50, Oglala, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, in Sioux Falls.

Survivors include her son, Cameron White Plume, Oglala; 35 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, John Stewart of Arizona, and Stacey Stewart, Pine Ridge; and three sisters, Betty Not Help Him, Deborah Stewart and Alfreda Stewart, all of Oglala.

A two-night wake will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Brother Rene Catholic Hall.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at the hall with Sister Connie Schmidt. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Mike Little Boy. Burial will be at Our Lady of the Sioux Catholic Cemetery.

RAPID CITY - Rose M. Torres, 65, Rapid City, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at home.

Survivors include her husband, Andres "Buzz" Torres, Rapid City; three sons, Michael Torres and Andy Torres, both of Rapid City, and Daniel Torres, Grand Island, Neb.; one daughter, Sarah Torres, Rapid City; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four brothers, Jesse Galvan, Michael Galvan and John Galvan, all of Grand Island, and Bobby Galvan, Omaha, Neb.; and three sisters, Sheila Sanchez, Omaha, Nicholas "Nikki" Perez, San Jose, Calif., and Emily Soto, Wood River, Neb.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church, with the Rev. Dave Matzko as celebrant.

Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Kirk Funeral Home and one hour before services at the funeral home.
