Dennis T. Hintz

DICKINSON, N.D. —There is one less cowboy out riding and roping today. Dennis Hintz lost his long battle with cancer at his home Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009, in Dickinson surrounded by his family.

Dennis was born May 20, 1945, in Lemmon, S.D., where he was greeted by his parents Tobias (Tobi) Hintz and Irene (Sorg) Hintz and two older siblings, Carole  (Sternad) Hintz and Gene Hintz.

Growing up, Dennis always had a love of the outdoors and animals. He was an active member of the Rough and Ready 4-H Club and could often be seen sitting on a horse or a milk cow (some would say this was the beginning of his great love of rodeo). As a young man Dennis attended elementary school in Cole Springs, S.D. and later graduated in 1965 from Faith (S.D.) High School. Dennis was also an active member of the South Dakota High School Rodeo Association and qualified for the state high school rodeo finals all four years. He was state calf roping champion in 1962. From that point on rodeo was as natural as breathing for this young man.

In 1967 a young cowgirl came riding into his life and three short months later he and Judy (Collins) were married. This union took place Nov. 11, 1967 at the Holy Rosary Church in Trail City, S.D.

Well, you can’t have a family and not have a job, so on Sept. 3, 1968, he began a long career working on the main branch line for the Milwaukee Railroad (which later became the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Line) and this was the job that he held throughout the years until his retirement in 2005. But for Dennis, there was only one thing that he truly loved to do, and that was rodeo. From the years of 1970 through the early ’80s he was an active member of the South Dakota Rodeo Assn. where he yielded six bareback championships and one All-around title and several reserve rodeo titles. He was also an active member of the NRCA at the same time receiving numerous rodeo titles.

In the early ’70s Dennis and Judy moved from their home in Eagle Butte, S.D., to Mobridge, S.D. In 1972, Denise (Bauman), the first of three daughters was born. Dennis, Judy and Denise were seen almost every weekend traveling to one rodeo or another. In 1977, another daughter, Marty Jo, was born, but that didn’t slow down their busy schedule either. Then in 1980, Jody LaRae came into the mix, and that completed the Hintz “rodeo team.”

As busy as he was helping to raise three daughters, he still continued to rodeo and in 1980 he was on the “Badlands” rodeo team at the Calgary Stampede, in Alberta, Canada. In 1988 he qualified for the National Old Timers rodeo association finals in Reno, Nev., bringing home the title of Champion Bareback rider.

In 1998 Dennis and Judy relocated to Dickinson, where he was an active member of the NDRA, MTRA and the Wrangler Roping Assn.

After retiring from the railroad, Dennis spent almost every day outside. He was either riding a young colt or out in the arena roping a few steers with neighbors like Bob Hansen and his best friend Mike Schulz ... or just heading off to watch his grandchildren doing what he loved doing, rodeo.

As Dennis enters that big rodeo in the sky, he waits for his family: his wife of 42 years, Judy (Collins) Hintz; daughters, Denise (Troy) Bauman, Marty Jo Hintz, and Jody Hintz (Ron Carson); grandchildren, Kaitlin Bauman, Kasey Bauman, Kohl Bauman, Tyler Hintz and Tobi Hintz; his mother, Irene Hintz; and siblings, Carole (Tom) Sternad and Gene Hintz.

In the grandstands waiting for him will be his father, Tobi and his nephew, Larry and his grandparents on both his mother’s and father’s side.

Visitation will be from

4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Sunday, Nov. 29, at the Family Worship Center in Mobridge.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30, at the church. A meal will follow the service before Dennis is laid to rest at the Trail City Cemetery under the direction of Stout Family Funeral Home of Mobridge.
