Luella ‘Lou’ Roth
KIMBALL — Luella “Lou” Helen Roth, 93, Kimball, died Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
She was born Nov. 18, 1915, at Parkston to Peter and Helen (Gard) Springer. Lou was the youngest of nine children and grew up on her parent’s farm. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Parkston High School. She worked as a secretary in the Agricultural Adjustment Administration office in Parkston for 10 years. As a young woman Lou enjoyed marksmanship in the Parkston Rifle Club.
On Nov. 9, 1948, Lou was united in marriage and life with Melvin V. Roth at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Parkston. They moved to Kimball that same month where Mel was employed at Burns Lumber Company and later at Fullerton Lumber Company. Lou worked part time at the lumber yard, the Ford Implement Company and Miller Law office as a bookkeeper. She also spent nine years at Community Bailey Hospital, now known as Mid-Dakota Hospital in Chamberlain, as a nurse’s aide. Because of her quality of care for the patients, Lou was inducted into the Wall of Fame at their facility in 2006.
Lou continued this outpouring of care for others and touched many lives by her abundant personal notes and cards, practical jokes, quick sense of humor and devotion to others. Because of her thoughtful spirit, your mailbox became a link to Lou’s heart.
In the last couple years, Lou ventured to Rapid City to live and to enjoy the daily companionship of her family, but she never lost interest in her Kimball roots.
She was a member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Altar Society, Catholic Daughters and Friends birthday club. Lou was actively involved in Mel’s sobriety and Al-Anon for 29 years. In fact together they prayed the Holy Rosary Novena nightly for years. Lou was a woman of valor and Mel and her family treasured her worth.
Lou had a deep and active faith. She had a rich and unwavering love for her husband, her children, grandchildren and her large extended family, as well as a wide array of friends. There were no strangers in Lou’s world as she drew everyone into her irresistible charm and care.
Lou loved to fish! She loved to play cards, and she also enjoyed quilting, bowling, golfing, and dancing. She had a fondness for Special Olympics. She took great pride in her yard, garden and home. She was spunky and full of zest and always had more she wanted to do and give, and more life she wanted to live.
Lou’s smile would light up the room and her touch and embrace would melt your heart. Her tremendous inner strength and faithful love nourished us all, led us by example.
Privileged to have shared in that are her daughter, Nancy Jo (Brent) Lester, Rapid City; her son, Rick, Lakewood, Colo.; her grandchildren, Carmen, Clint, Brandon, Shanda, Tia, Luke (Brittani); her great-grandchildren, Trysta Bergman and Jaxen Roth; her sister, Angeline Behrend, Parkston; sisters-in-law, Joan Roth, Parkston, Genevive Springer, Clinton, Iowa, Margaret Springer, Edina, Minn., Sister Naomi Roth, Pierre, and Jean Roth, Dimock; along with numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
