STURGIS -- Problems with a window supplier have pushed Meade County's remodeling of the Erskine Building back six weeks. Until that project is done, other projects such as remodeling the courthouse can't begin.

Architect Jason Roberdeau informed the Meade County Commission of a problem with Weather Shield during the commission's March 2 meeting.

"We've been unable to come to terms with the supplier coming to the specs provided," Roberdeau said.

Weather Shield was the lower bidder for the windows, coming in at $169,000.

Issues include lateness in returning designs and with forcing a window not to the specifications to work. Roberdeau said the issues began appearing in July but did not come to a head until recently.

"There were multiple rejections of drawing due to aesthetic issues," Roberdeau said.

The window provided also lacked a proper guard against water, according to Roberdeau.

"We can maybe look past some of the aesthetics but water intrusion can't be overlooked," he said.

While there is no responsibility for the county to take up additional costs in securing a new subcontractor for the windows, Roberdeau did ask if the county could assist in the cost. The window delay would also affect the general contractor's finish date and penalties could be assessed at that time.

"We'd be hard pressed to impose a penalty given extenuating circumstances," Commissioner Gary Cammack said. Cammack also asked what responsibility the architect has in the matter.

Roberdeau said that, upon review, Weather Shield provided misinformation about what they could and could not do.
