Wesley Wayne Stark, 27, faces five counts of aggravated assault and drunken driving after being arrested Saturday evening. He is accused of threatening a family with a gun in an apparent case of road rage.
Stark, of Rapid City, was arrested near the Rapid City Police Department after chasing a family in another car and pointing a semiautomatic handgun out his car window at them, said Capt. Ed Hofkamp. Hofkamp said it appeared Stark thought the other car cut him off when it passed him while he was driving slowly south on Mount Rushmore Road. The family -- which included children ages 3, 5, and 10 -- called police from a cell phone, turned around and drove to the police station.
"They saw the gun. He pointed it out the window at them," Hofkamp said. The gun was not loaded, he said. Stark also was charged with possession of a firearm while intoxicated. Police arrested Stark at Kansas City and Second streets at 8 p.m. Saturday.
