Defense lawyers for a man charged with killing a deputy sheriff have asked a judge to move the trial out of Turner County or conduct a survey of potential jurors to see if they can be fair and impartial.

No trial date has been set for Ethan Johns, who is charged with alternate counts of first-degree murder and second-degree murder.

He is accused of shooting and killing Turner County Deputy Chad Mechels last March when the deputy went to a farm west of Marion to check on Johns' well-being.

Lawyers for Johns ask that the trial be moved to Sioux Falls.
