PIERRE | South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard has signed a bill making concealed weapons permits valid for five years, up from the current four years.

The measure passed unanimously in both the House and Senate.

The bill's main sponsor, Sen. Larry Rhoden, of Union Center, has said that he eventually wants to change the law so that once people get concealed weapons permits they would not have to undergo separate background checks every time they buy a gun. That would require issuing concealed weapons permits based on the same database used to approve gun sales.

The fee for issuing the permit is $10, with $7 going to the state and $3 going to the county or municipality issuing the permit.

Regarding this information... "The fee for issuing the permit is $10, with $7 going to the state and $3 going to the county or municipality issuing the permit."

Pistol permits are issued only by the Sheriffs of the county in which the applicant resides. (SDCL 23-7-7) Municipalities do not issue permits. The language referenced above is from SDCL 23-7-8.2, which was not amended for consistency with 23-7-7.
