The Dahl Arts Center announces its 2007 summer schedule of art classes for children and adults of all ages and skill levels.

Preschool art classes
- Painted Blocks for ages 3-5 meets 10 a.m.-10:45 a.m. Monday, July 30. Participants will learn about shapes and colors using wooden blocks to paint, and then decorate a bag to take home. Cost is $12; $15 nonmembers.
- My Own Puzzle for ages 3-5 meets 10 a.m.-10:45 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6. The bold, painted masterpiece has large, take-apart pieces to reassemble again and again. Cost is $12; $15 nonmembers.
- Puppet Paradise for ages 3-5 meets 10 a.m.-10:45 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27. Monsters, princesses, cats and monkeys - little hands will bring puppets to life with yarn hair, round noses and panting tongues. Cost is $12; $15 nonmembers.
- Clay Creations for ages 9-15 meets 1:30 p.m.-3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 31 and Aug. 2, 7 and 9. Students will use pottery clay that will be fired and glazed to a ceramic shine, exploring hand-building techniques and wheel throwing. Class includes clay, glazes and use of tools. Cost is $50; $55 nonmembers.
Elementary school art classes
- Treasure Hunt for grades K-5 meets 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Monday, July 30, and Wednesday, Aug. 1. This mixed media class will include collage and design techniques. Treasure designs will be rounded off with hats and safe swords. Cost is $21; $26 nonmembers.
- Race to Outer Space for grades K-5 meets 1:30 p.m.-3 p.m. Monday, July 30, and Wednesday, Aug. 1. Students will learn to draw the cosmos in this craft and mixed media class. Create a bright painted mobile with colorful ribbons to adorn the skies of your bedroom. Cost is $21; $26 nonmembers.
- Ocean Adventure for grades K-5 meets 1:30 p.m.-3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6; Wednesday, Aug. 8; and Friday, Aug. 10. This journey through watercolor paint will concentrate on drawing and painting methods to depict undersea life, fish, seaweed and bubbling swirls of water. Students will embellish a frame to display their art. Cost is $35; $40 nonmembers.
- Monsters and Make Believe for children in kindergarten through grade 5 meets 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, Aug. 7 and 9. Furry hair, button eyes and manes of yarn will bring to life monster puppets. Simple sewing skills will be taught and fiber explored, and students will make their own tabletop theater. Cost is $22; $27 nonmembers.
Youth and adult art classes
- Innovative Impressions with Deborah Mitchell for ages 16 and older meets 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 4 and 5. The monotype print-making class will teach a variety of traditional and nontraditional methods of creating a two-dimensional image with a rolling pin, spoon or even a car. Students will work to their own satisfaction before committing the image to paper. Cost is $60; $65 nonmembers, plus supplies.
- Learn and Earn Program for degree seekers, teachers, homeschooling parents and artists. Four classes are available this summer for people who want to improve their art skills, enhance teaching ability and improve career marketability. Graduate credit is available through Augustana College for $50.
Summer arts camps
- City Life Arts Camp for ages 5-12 with Cyndi Simpson and Mattie Lerdal meets 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday to Friday, Aug. 13-17. Students will capture the rhythm of living in the city with graffiti art and hip hop dance. Create upbeat cityscapes, colorful painted-word art and tie-dye a T-shirt. Upbeat music will get bodies moving in modern dance. Students will show off their street smarts in a last-day performance and art show. Tuition is $125; $150 nonmembers.
- Summer Art Splash for ages 5-12 with Susan Wenzel and area artists meets 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday to Friday, Aug. 20-24. Drawing, painting, clay, sculpture, jewelry, crafts and more will be the focus of this visual arts camp. Students will bubble paint outdoors, splash colors in watercolor, make kites and origami, discover the art of sidewalk chalk and create rolling motorcycle sculptures. Tuition is $125; $150 nonmembers.
Theater camp
- You Look Marvelous for grades 1-8 meets Monday to Friday, Aug. 6-10. Class will not meet full days; the rehearsal schedule is based on casting. An outreach of the Black Hills Playhouse, the Children's Theatre Company of South Dakota was created to bring quality theater experience to children. The one-week residency culminates in a musical production featuring up to 54 local children, with parts designed for every age, skill and experience level. The play is an entertaining retelling of the Hans Christian Anderson fable about the pitfalls of vanity and greed and the truth of the statements "there are no stupid questions" and "just because everyone else believes something is true doesn't mean it is." Cost is $40.
