An Eagle Butte man who admitted beating his wife at her LaPlante home was ordered to serve six months in federal custody Tuesday.

Joseph Marshall, 34, was initially charged with two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon for the November 2011 attack. He was allowed to plead guilty to one charge of assault by striking, beating and wounding.

Marshall was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshal to begin serving his sentence.

It saddens me that spousal abuse has been going on for, what seems like forever. When will we ever learn that for as intelligent as we are, it is NEVER okay to abuse anyone?
